Platinum gains seen short-lived after mine tragedy

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Platinum futures rose more than 5% in the last two sessions after the killing of more than 30 striking workers in a South African platinum mine, but plentiful supplies and slack demand make such gains likely short-lived.

The deaths reverberated in the commodities market Friday, highlighting the challenges of platinum, a market where supplies are as abundant as labor disputes and production snags.

Platinum for October delivery (US:PLV2), the most active contract, gained $37.90, or 2.6%, to settle at $1,473.10 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange Friday. That was its highest settlement since early July.

Police officers opened fire on armed miners from Lonmin Plc’s (UK:LMI) Marikana mine in northeast South Africa Thursday, resulting in nearly three dozen deaths and more than 70 wounded. South African President Jacob Zuma cut short a trip to Mozambique to visit the mine, according to reports.

Lonmin has said it has lost six days of mined production due to the strike, which started last Friday. More than 10 people were killed earlier in the week as the conflict escalated. Shares of the company fell 8% in London in the last two days.

Pressure to restore output
Platinum markets have been in surplus. The industry may now find it difficult to scale back output due to fears of further strife.

The Marikana deaths represent a “worrying trend for the platinum industry,” said Anne-Laure Temblay, an analyst with BNP Paribas, in a note to clients.

Social tensions seem to be spiraling out of control in South Africa and will make it more difficult for companies to make production cuts in the coming months, she said.

Nearly two-thirds of the world’s platinum is mined in South Africa, where aging mines, frequent labor struggles, and power supply interruptions have long worried investors.

The supply surplus and a tepid demand outlook have held back platinum’s gains. Even with the Lonmin production halt, platinum futures have added 5.4% in the past two days. They are up more than 4% for the year.

“Most of the gains (due to the conflict at Marikana) are behind us,” said Edward Meir, an analyst at INTL FCStone Inc. “The tragedy has garnered so much attention ... there will be a lot of pressure in South Africa to restore security and production will resume” relatively quickly.

Including the disruption at Marikana, the market is expected to remain on a surplus this year, analysts at Barclays said in a note to clients Friday.

Demand for platinum has been hit by concerns about the euro zone’s sovereign debt crisis and worries of a slowdown in China. Scaled-back growth in these regions has undermined consumption of platinum, a key part of catalytic converters for diesel automobile engines, which are more prevalent in Europe and China.

Pelo menos 36 mineiros sul-africanos foram abatidos a tiro pela polícia. O número foi avançado pelo sindicato dos trabalhadores, vítimas daquele que já foi considerado o maior massacre na África do sul desde o fim do Apartheid, no início da década de 90.

Os confrontos entre a polícia e os operários das minas de platina que se manifestavam na cidade de Marikana, a 100 quilómetros de Joanesburgo,
terminou mal esta quinta-feira.

Cerca de 3000 trabalhadores iniciaram na sexta-feira uma greve que foi considerada ilegal pela empresa britânica proprietária da mina.

Os mineiros reivindicam aumentos salariais e recusavam desmobilizar, apesar de terem sido alvo de várias pressões.

Mas ninguém esperava um desfecho como este. A polícia tinha prometido por fim aos protestos e foi o que fez depois de abrir fogo sobre um grupo de manifestantes.

No local estavam câmaras de televisão e as imagens correram mundo.

As autoridades sul-africanas ainda não explicaram o que levou a polícia a disparar sobre os mineiros.

Milhares de mineiros em greve aguardavam respostas das negociações com os representantes da Lonmin. A espera terminou da pior forma. A polícia sul-africana abriu fogo sobre um grupo de trabalhadores. Vários corpos ficaram estendidos no chão. Estima-se que o número de mortos ronde as duas dezenas.

No fim de semana passado, a paralisação da mina de Marikana, no noroeste da África do Sul, já tinha provocado dez mortos, na sequência de confrontos entre os mineiros e as autoridades.

O braço de ferro iniciou-se entre os próprios trabalhadores da exploração de platina pertencente ao grupo Lonmin. Os membros de dois sindicatos rivais não se entendem quanto às reinvindicações a exigir. A plataforma sindical que já existia acusa os membros de uma nova organização de pretenderem condições impraticáveis, como o triplo dos salários, que atualmente não ultrapassam os 400 euros mensais.

Os mineiros da mina de platina de Marikana, na África do Sul, prosseguem a greve apesar da presença da polícia e da decisão de um tribunal que considera a paralisação ilegal.

Desde sexta-feira que três mil mineiros deixaram de trabalhar, exigindo os aumentos salariais que a companhia Lonmin lhes prometeu no momento em que foram contratados.

“Trabalhamos arduamente com as máquinas, mas não ganhamos para mandar os nosso filhos à escola. Tudo o que queremos é dinheiro. Mesmo que tenham mandado a polícia para aqui, não desistimos, porque não estamos a lutar contra ninguém. Tudo o que queremos é dinheiro”.

Os mineiros estão a ser guiados por dois sindicatos em conflito. A tensão é enorme; desde domingo já foram mortas 10 pessoas.

A companhia ameaça despedir todos os que insistirem na greve e o conflito poderá degenerar em mais violência.

Lonmin, which is dealing with a crippling strike and outbreaks of violence at its Marikana mine which saw ten people killed, reported on Thursday that its CEO Ian Farmer is in hospital.

Farmer has been "diagnosed with a serious illness and is presently in hospital", the platinum producer, said in a Sens statement.

Its Chairman Roger Phillimore will look after Farmer's day-to-day duties. In addition, Mohamed Seedat, a director of the business will join the Exco to provide added support.

Lonmin also said the situation at its Marikana mines has remained relatively quiet since the morning of Wednesday August 15 but matters remain tense.

"The striking Rock Drill Operators (RDOs) remain armed and away from work. This is illegal under the Labour Relations Act. Consequently, and in keeping with the terms of a Court Order granted to Lonmin on August 11 2012, the illegal strikers have today (Thursday 16 August) been issued with a final ultimatum to return to work by their next shift on Friday August 17 or face dismissal," says the statement.

As a result of the disruption, Lonmin has so far lost six days of mined production, representing approximately 300 000 tonnes of ore, or 15 000 platinum equivalent ounces.

"Consequently, it is unlikely that Lonmin will meet its full year guidance of 750 000 saleable ounces of platinum," it said.
The company's share price was down 5% to R85.50 at 3:40pm. Since Friday its share price has fallen 12.

An attempt by the police to disperse striking workers at Marikana's troubled Lonmin mine has ended in a shootout between the two groups.


A Sapa reporter at the scene said he counted 18 bodies lying next to the nearby Wonderkop squatter camp. The shooting lasted about three minutes.

Police had tried to intercept a section of the strikers gathered on top of a hill.

The strikers were wielding pangas and chanting war songs. Police fired teargas and then used a water cannon to disperse the strikers, who retaliated by firing live ammunition at the police.

The area around the hill, which the strikers had turned into their base for the past few days, was cordoned off with barbed wire.

The strikers scattered towards the squatter camp and the nearby veld.

Police spokesperson Captain Dennis Adriao told journalists at the scene police had been "tactical" in their approach and that the situation was tense.

Police officers said talks with leaders of the radical Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) had broken down, leaving no option but to disperse them by force.

"Today is unfortunately D-day," Adriao said.

Ten people, including two policemen, have died in nearly a week of fighting between rival worker factions at the mine, the latest platinum plant to be hit by fallout from an eight-month union turf war in the world's main producer of the precious metal.

On Wednesday, up to 3 000 police officers, including members of an elite, camouflage-wearing riot control unit backed by helicopters and horses, confronted the striking rock-drill operators, but there were no clashes.

Before the police advance, Joseph Mathunjwa, president of Amcu, which has been on a big recruitment push in South Africa's platinum mines, said there would be bloodshed if police moved in.

"We're going nowhere," he shouted through a loudhailer, to cheers from the crowd. "If need be, we're prepared to die here."

The unrest has forced Marikana's London-headquartered owner to halt production at all its South African operations, which account for 12% of global platinum output.

Lonmin said it had lost the equivalent of 15 000 ounces of platinum from the six-day disruption, and was unlikely to meet its full-year production target of 750 000 ounces.

Its London-listed shares were down more than 6% on Thursday, bringing total losses since the violence began to more than 13%.

The Marikana strikers have not made their demands explicit, although much of the bad blood stems from a turf war between Amcu and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the dominant union for the last two decades.

At least three people were killed in a similar round of fighting in January that led to a six-week closure of the world's largest platinum mine, run by Impala Platinum. That helped push the platinum price up 15%.

South Africa is home to 80% of the world's known platinum reserves, but rising power and labour costs and a sharp drop in the price of the precious metal this year have left many mines struggling to keep their heads above water. - Sapa, Reuters

(Reuters) - The world's no. 3 platinum producer Lonmin (LMI.L) (LONJ.J) has been forced to freeze mining at its South African operations after violence between rival unions killed at least nine people.

Lonmin, already struggling with low prices and weak demand, may miss its annual production target of 750,000 ounces as the quarter to the end of September is typically its best. Its share price fell more than 4 percent in London and Johannesburg.

The London-based company accounts for 12 percent of global platinum output and the shutdown drove the spot price of the precious metal as much as 2 percent higher.

Two policemen and two security guards were among those killed in the clashes from Friday to Monday at the Marikana mine, about 100 km (60 miles) northwest of Johannesburg.

It was the deadliest violence yet in a membership turf war between the dominant National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the newer Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) in South Africa, home to 80 percent of known platinum reserves.

Executives at Lonmin said mining had stopped at all its shafts across the South African platinum belt, though essential services such as ventilation were continuing. The fact that the shafts remain operational should allow mining to restart as soon as miners return to work.

"Until the place is safe we don't want to talk about production," Lonmin Executive Vice President Barnard Mokwena told a press briefing at Marikana.

The company said its ore processing division remained operational, but stockpiles were low.

The latest violence began on Friday during an illegal strike held by 3,000 rock drill operators at Lonmin's Western Platinum mine. AMCU and NUM members clashed, and police and security guards trying to restore order were caught up in the violence.

"Management, they are in support of NUM, they're sleeping in one bed with NUM," AMCU President Joseph Mathunjwa told a news briefing. AMCU officials deny their members are behind the unrest, but a pattern of illegal strikes followed by violence is emerging in the wake of their recruiting efforts.

Lonmin said it would issue the employees who initiated the stay away with an ultimatum on Wednesday. This could lead to the dismissal of at least 3,000 mineworkers should they not return to work.

At least three people were killed in a similar round of labour violence in January that led to a six-week closure of the world's largest platinum mine, run by Impala Platinum (IMPJ.J). That helped push the platinum price up 15 percent.

"The price rise in February was probably partly due to the Impala disruption, and you could easily see a price rise if the current disruption is sustained," said David Jollie, an analyst at Mitsui Precious Metals.

HELICOPTERS AND HORSES

The AMCU-NUM rivalry, which had already caused friction at Lonmin's Karee mine, has now spread to other shafts at a time when the company is cutting back on investment plans in the face of weak demand and shrinking margins.

Scores of police officers, including units mounted on horseback backed by armoured vehicles, descended on the Marikana facility on Tuesday to prevent any repeat of the violence.

Police helicopters clattered overhead as officers set up checkpoints and laid down barbed wire. In a nearby township, a group of men, apparently mine workers, gathered carrying sticks and bars.

Mines Minister Susan Shabangu, speaking to reporters near Johannesburg, said she was prepared to intervene to try to solve the Marikana dispute but did not say how.

"It's quite clear it's rivalry between the two unions. If this matter continues we are going to be involved in the process of making sure we find peace," she said.

Some miners have complained that the NUM, a buttress of electoral support for South Africa's ruling African National Congress, does not defend the interests of its rank and file.

Aggressive smaller unions have been poaching NUM members and Lonmin executives said 21 percent of the company's 28,000-strong South African workforce were now AMCU members.

Pelo menos nove pessoas morreram na África do Sul em confrontos entre sindicados mineiros. Os incidentes registaram-se numa mina de platina da empresa Lonmin, a terceira maior extratora mundial deste metal.

A polícia disse à agência Reuters que dois polícias morreram a golpes de machete, depois de terem sido atacados por uma multidão em fúria, perto da mina Western Platinum, que se situa a uma centena de quilómetros a noroeste de Joanesburgo. Um outro agente ficou ferido.

Os agentes acabaram matar três manifestantes. «Fomos atacados. Três suspeitos retiraram-nos as armas. Seguiu-se um tiroteio e três suspeitos foram feridos fatalmente», disse Lindela Mashigo, porta-voz das autoridades.

No domingo, já tinham sido mortos dois guardas, assim como um sindicalista. Um funcionário da mina também foi encontrado morto dentro do seu carro com vários ferimentos de bala. Outros três trabalhadores ficaram feridos com gravidade depois de terem tentado ir trabalhar

Os mais recentes incidentes nesta mina começaram na sexta-feira, com uma greve ilegal por parte de três mil perfuradores, quando elementos do sindicato AMCU tentaram recrutar alguns trabalhadores ligados ao NUM, um sindicato mais antigo e maior.

A Lonmin salienta que a mina está agora a funcionar com uma capacidade reduzida e com um forte dispositivo policial no local.

Esta mina tem sido palco de vários incidentes nos últimos tempos. Este mês um dos poços chegou a ser encerrado, depois de um grupo violento ter matado três pessoas e ferido 20.
