Intel cuts sales outlook on weak PC demand, shares fall

(Reuters) - Intel Corp cut its third-quarter revenue estimate and withdrew its full-year forecast, saying demand for its chips declined as customers reduced inventory and businesses bought fewer personal computers.

The revenue warning sent shares of the world's largest chipmaker down more than 3 percent in premarket trading.

Intel, Advanced Micro Devices and others in the PC industry have been hit by a shaky global economy and consumers shifting toward tablets and smartphones.

"Everybody up and down the food chain has been saying this. Intel was one of the last hold-outs," Williams Financial Group analyst Cody Acree said.

"The assumption was not whether they'd preannounce but to what degree."
Acree said the outlook is in line with what he would have expected after AMD forecast third-quarter revenue below expectations in July.

Intel lowered its full-year revenue forecast in July, saying consumer spending in Europe and the United States had been weaker than what the company had previously expected.
The company said on Friday it expects third-quarter revenue of $13.2 billion, plus or minus $300 million, down from its previous forecast of $13.8 billion to $14.8 billion.

Full-year capital spending is expected to be below the low-end of its previous forecast of $12.1 billion to $12.9 billion, the company said.

The company withdrew all other quarterly and full-year expectations.

Intel expects gross margin of 62 percent for the third quarter, plus or minus one percentage point, down from its previous expectation of 63 percent, plus or minus a couple of percentage points.

The company's shares, which closed at $25.10 on the Nasdaq on Thursday, fell to $24.20 in premarket trading on Friday. AMD was trading slightly lower at $3.60.

A minha opinião é esta: no curto prazo é uma lotaria completa.

No longo prazo, normalmente a apresentação de resultados não afecta a tendência dominante - ou seja, é raro haver apresentações de resultados que originem uma inversão da tendência primária.

Ainda não aprendi como me posicionar aquando da apresentação de resultados. Não sei se hei-de de entrar antes ou depois. Já tive boas e más surpresas...se o preço diz tudo, a Intel deve ir apresentar maus resultados, mas pode apresentar resultados menos maus que os esperados e a cotação disparar... enfim ninguém disse que isto era fácil

Intel Q1 Beats, Q1 Rev View Tops Consensus

Intel (INTC) this afternoon reported Q1 revenue and profit ahead of consensus.

Revenue in the three months ended in March rose to $12.9 billion, yielding EPS of 56 cents.

Analysts had been modeling $12.85 billion and 50 cents a share.

Intel shares are down 47 cents, or 1.7%, at $28 in late trading.

The company forecast Q2 revenue of $13.1 billion to $14.1 billion, ahead of the consensus estimate of $13.43 billion.

I first alerted on this one yesterday night as a possible breakout candidate and this morning on Twitter I said the stock was on my watch radar. The stock did what it was supposed to do and was one of the big winners on Friday, closing up 55 cents on the day. This was a good run for those who jumped in at that time. The stock broke out of a consolidation that has been a pause in its steep, more than 10% up move in January. INTC traded heavy volume as it hit a high of $27.50. This high is resistance for Tuesday’s continuation move. If the stock can break through this level, I expect to see another strong upside move. "

(AP) NEW YORK — The world's biggest chip-maker, Intel Corp., reports fourth-quarter results Thursday, shedding light on its challenges as the PC market stagnates and more consumer dollars move to smartphones and tablets, where the company is only starting to gain a foothold.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Intel's expectations for 2012 will be in focus. It's introducing a new generation of chips, code-named "Ivy Bridge," which should be in PCs this spring. Last week, it announced that the first smartphone with an Intel processor will be sold by Lenovo Corp. this spring in China. Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., soon to be bought by Google Inc., also committed to making phones and tablets with Intel chips.

That's the culmination of years of effort by Intel to curb the power consumption of it chips to the point where they can go into phones. But it comes as the company faces a number of threats. In the short term, the flooding of hard drive factories in Thailand and the weak global economy is hurting PC sales, and Intel cut its fourth-quarter revenue forecast a month ago.

In the longer term, Intel's dominance in PCs is threatened by phone-style chips based on designs from Britain's ARM Holdings PLC. Nvidia Corp., Texas Instruments Inc. and Qualcomm Corp. are big makers of these chips, and expect to make inroads into Intel territory when Microsoft Corp. releases its new version of Windows later this year. It will come in a version that runs on ARM-based chips. It's expected to be used in tablets first.

WHY IT MATTERS: Intel's processors are inside some 80 percent of the world's PCs, and its results are often a bellwether for other chip companies.

WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect that Intel earned 61 cents per share on $13.74 billion in revenue. Intel's revenue forecast is for $13.4 billion to $14 billion.

LAST YEAR'S QUARTER: In the same period last year, Intel earned 59 cents per share on $11.5 billion in revenue.
