TomTom Shares Rally as Profits Surge

AMSTERDAM—Dutch navigation-equipment maker TomTom NV shares surged 23% Monday as the company posted higher-than-expected profits for the third quarter and said it will cut costs and lay off some workers to halt a slide in sales.
Amsterdam-based TomTom, which competes with Cayman Islands-based Garmin Ltd., said net profit for the three months to Sept. 30 rose 53% to €29 million ($40.3 million), compared with €19 million a year earlier, mainly owing to lower interest payments as its debt load decline. TomTom was also helped by the euro's depreciation against the U.S. dollar during the quarter.
Still, sales declined 10% to €336 million, as consumers bought fewer personal-navigation devices, which contribute to almost half of TomTom's overall sales. Consumer revenues dropped 24% to €225 million, more than offsetting the 43% increase in sales in its automotive unit.
"We have started a restructuring program which will focus our organization on the areas where we see the greatest potential for growth, of which automotive and content & services are clear examples," Chief Executive Harold Goddijn said in a statement.
He said the restructuring, which will include job cuts, is "a regrettable but necessary step to adapt the company to the changed conditions in the markets we operate in."
Mr. Goddijn said that the company has to become "a simpler organization with fewer management layers and more aggressive in growth areas."
TomTom forecast the cost savings at €50 million.
TomTom's quarterly results significantly beat analysts expectations, and SNS Securities analyst Martijn den Drijver said they are "very strong."
Shares were up 23% higher at €3.74, while benchmark index AEX was up 0.1%. So far this year, TomTom, which almost halved its full-year profit estimates in June, has lost over 60% of its value.
TomTom said the market for personal-navigation devices in Europe and North America fell 19% from a year earlier, and Mr. Goddijn said he expects a further decline in demand for the devices in 2012, but he didn't elaborate.
Mr. Goddijn also said he can't see any sign that consumer confidence is returning and that he expects fourth-quarter sales to decline from a year earlier.
Nevertheless, TomTom is slightly more optimistic for its full-year results. It still expects full-year sales of €1.23 billion to €1.28 billion, and confirmed its 2011 guidance for earnings per share of between €0.25 and €0.30, but now sees 2011 results at the upper end of the forecast range.

TomTom to supply New Daily - Iveco's new generation professional vehicle model - with semi-integrated connected navigation
Amsterdam, 11 October 2011 – TomTom, today announces that it will provide the New Daily, the latest evolution of the Iveco's proven light commercial vehicle range, with semi-integrated navigation based on the GO LIVE 1000 series. The navigation system sits neatly in the dashboard thanks to the dedicated cradle designed specifically for automotive applications. In addition, New Daily customers can now enjoy the benefits of TomTom's HD Traffic enabling professional drivers to take the fastest route to their destination based on the most accurate, real time traffic information covering 99.9% of the road network.
The Iveco Daily owes its success to sales in 2.5 million DAILY units sold worldwide, with the new generation launched in September 2011. Since the latest evolution of Daily and ECODAILY was unveiled in 2009, over 100,000 units have been purchased in just two years.
"We are pleased to be equipping such a successful flagship model from Iveco with our connected navigation so that professional drivers can also enjoy the benefits our LIVE Services offer", says Giles Shrimpton, Managing Director TomTom Automotive.
The GO LIVE 1000 series for Iveco will be available at Iveco dealers in Q4 2011, and will be sold in all the countries covered by the LIVE services.
Key features
•HD Traffic - a combination of real time traffic and unique dynamic routing. The real time traffic information is generated from a network of over 80 million probes in Europe. It covers 99.9% of the road network, reports more traffic jams in real-time and is also refreshed more frequently than any other service
•Up-to-date speed camera information on both fixed and mobile cameras en route
•Live weather updates and local search which is sent directly to the SIM card of your device
•Mechanical integration through a specifically designed cradle"
