Instant view: Weber out of the race to become ECB President

FRANKFURT | Wed Feb 9, 2011 6:32am EST

(Reuters) - Bundesbank President Axel Weber is out of the running to become the next head of the European Central Bank, top-level European sources said on Wednesday.

The Bundesbank issued a statement denying that it would issue a statement imminently on Weber's future.

Below is reaction from economists and ECB observers.

SILVIO PERUZZO, ECONOMIST, RBS

"This clearly comes as a surprise for the market and it may have implications in terms of market pricing for some securities and the currency."

"There have been stories about Mario Draghi and possibly Yves Mersch as the alternatives to Weber. Mersch is probably a candidate that is similar to Weber in terms of policy slant."

"That someone with a more dovish leaning might take over at the head of the bank might have implications for rates and markets' view of policy and how accommodative it remains going forward."

JAMES NIXON, ECONOMIST, SOCIETE GENERALE

"I think it's been clear for some time that Weber was too abrasive a character for the role of ECB President."

"If Weber had been president he would have been a very hawkish president, but now I expect we will have a character that is more of a committee player."

"That may not mean too much of a difference in the ECB's reaction function. They will still target inflation."

"I am still of the view that it has to be a German. My top tip is Klaus Regling."

LONDON-BASED BOND TRADER:

"Just because Weber is potentially not going to take over from Trichet doesn't mean we're not going to get another hawkish candidate. It would be better for the market to wait for the official news, we're only going on leaks at this moment in time."

KORNELIUS PURPS, ECONOMIST, UNICREDIT

"If Weber were not available, that would be a big surprise. I counted him as one of the top candidates. The impact on the euro should stay within limits, because -- no matter who takes over -- a stability-oriented monetary policy should be guaranteed. But Weber would certainly have been a guarantee for especially stability-oriented monetary policy.

KEN WATTRET, ECONOMIST, BNP PARIBAS

"We need confirmation but if this is true, we are back to square one. If the Weber candidacy is in the water, it would be bond-market friendly. We have three scenarios if Weber is no longer a candidate; either another German will become president, or a compromise candidate from a small euro zone country, or Mr Draghi. I would still say another German would be the most likely scenario. There is no obvious candidate if it's not Mr Weber -- the others all have some complications."
