NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of the eBay Inc. fell Thursday after the online marketplace operator's earnings forecast for the second quarter disappointed investors.

Shares dropped $1.66, or 6.3 percent, to $24.63 in afternoon trading. The stock has ranged from $14.06 to $28.37 over the past year.

For the quarter ending in June, eBay late Wednesday forecast an adjusted profit of 37 cents to 39 cents per share on revenue of $2.15 billion to $2.20 billion. Analysts predicted higher income of 40 cents per share on revenue of $2.21 billion, according to a survey by Thomson Reuters.

Nevertheless, Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian said in a note to clients, "We believe the results still generally support our thesis of a gradual turnaround on eBay.com."

He reiterated a "Buy" rating on the stock.

Jefferies & Co. analyst Youssef Squali also reiterated a "Buy" rating. "Fundamentals continue to show improvement," he wrote in a client note.

EBay recorded an adjusted profit of 42 cents per share for the first quarter, while analysts expected profit of 41 cents per share. Revenue climbed 9 percent to $2.2 billion, matching analyst estimates.
