"Martifer Considers U.K. Projects, U.S. Energy Growth

"Sept. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Martifer SGPS SA, which makes metal towers for General Electric Co. and Vestas Wind Systems A/S windmills, said it may bid for metal-structure contracts in the U.K. and plans to expand in the U.S. renewable-energy market.

“The U.K. is a market with potential,” although “difficult to enter,” Vice Chairman Jorge Martins said in an interview at the company’s Lisbon office on Sept. 1. “It’s the most relevant market in Europe” for a wide variety of metal structures, including components in buildings and bridges.

The Portuguese company won contracts this year to build the metallic structures for a Renault factory in Morocco and Repsol YPF SA’s Madrid headquarters and plans to set up its second factory to produce wind-turbine towers with partner Hirschfield Industries in Texas.

Martifer is willing to take on bigger rivals in the U.K., said Martins. U.K. companies such as Severfield-Rowen Plc have sidestepped a property slump by supplying airports, hospitals and other infrastructure projects. In Spain, where it took five years to grab a relevant market share, Martifer now competes “as equals” and is considered a leader, he said. (...)"
