AMD cuts costs

That pleases analysts who also have praised some of AMD's latest products. Moreover, the company has been bolstered by a major deal completed March 2 with Abu Dhabi investors, in which it will spin off its manufacturing operations into a separate business, get an $825 million cash infusion and shed $1.1 billion of debt.

"If they hadn't had the Abu Dhabi deal in place by last fall, we would really be wondering whether they would make it during this economic downturn," said Nathan Brookwood, a research fellow at Saratoga market consulting firm Insight 64. Now, he added, "it's dramatically different from the company that existed two years ago."

Yet despite its financial cushion, analysts say, AMD still has the challenge of producing competitive microprocessors and making money in a market where PC sales are plummeting. In a note to its clients Thursday, investment bank Raymond James & Associates warned, "we continue to have little confidence on AMD's ability to turn a profit over the next several years."

Ainda vou pensar nisso.

Atomez,

Até já me deu algumas alegrias (i.e. $$$)

AMD Now A-OK?

Cramer's prediction yesterday that tech hasn't seen bottom yet and was due for more beating came true today, with most big tech names ending lower. One of the most beaten-down of these companies was AMD [AMD 2.43 -0.27 (-10%) ]. Still, even with the dismal tech sector in the dismal overall market, there's still money to be made IF you're willing to speculate on battered stocks like -- you got it -- AMD. But "battered" doesn't even do this company justice: it's down 67% for the year and had another bloody session today.

Having been so vocal against this stock for so long, Cramer dropped a big bomb today: "You can now start building a position in, yes, it's true, AMD, but leave some room to buy in December when AMD could be even lower." WHAT? Yes, you heard right! Cramer says it's time to start thinking about building a position in -- AMD!

In case you've been in a cave for the last ten years, AMD competes with Intel [INTC 13.32 -1.11 (-7.69%) ] in the CPU market, where it makes 78% of its sales. As gamers and other hardcore computer users know, AMD also makes graphics chips that puts the pretty pictures on your monitor. This is 17% of its sales business, but it has a tough competitor in NVIDIA [NVDA 7.17 -0.77 (-9.7%) ] (although analysts recently gave AMD a nod in their ongoing battle for market share). The final 5% of its sales are miscellaneous other processor chips, such as for game consoles and smart phones.

How did AMD end up with its unenviable single-digit stock price? "It worked hard." A series of bad decisions starting in 2006 led this once up-and-coming stock to its almost down-and-out current placement. Its CPU market share was once 25% and looked likely to keep growing. But several bad business decisions and poor product lines later, its share is now 19%, it hasn't been in the red since 2005 and 78% of its capital is "a huge debt burden ... that keeps dragging the company down."

Okay, so with all this bad juju, why should you start building AMD now? "Because the company is finally focusing on profitability instead of market share" by spinning off its chip manufacturing operation: AMD has sold 55% of its "cash draining" chip manufacturing business to an Abu Dhabi firm for $700M, while also selling 58M of its own shares and 30M warrants to an Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund for $300M.

This new chip making business will assume $1.2B of current AMD debt. AMD's remaining 44% in chip manufacturing will stay on the books, while it gains about a billion in cash and dropping $1.2B debt. Cramer notes an additional bonus: AMD's Chairman and "incompetent former CEO, ex-wall of shamer" Hector Ruiz will go to the new manufacturing company, which, by the way, Cramer advises selling should you get any shares.

The spinoff -- which should be a done deal early 2009 -- puts off talks of bankruptcy and sets up a leaner AMD to "become profitable by the end of its fiscal 2009." Along with aditional cost-cutting measures, it may reach its needed $1.5B breakeven revenue level. Also, points out Cramer, the company has maintained its Q4 guidance and, at such a low price, "any good news could move the stock higher."

Bottom Line: "If AMD can't get it together, I don't see the stock falling much below $2.20, which was AMD's cash per share before the Abu Dhabi deal -- so this stock fits my criteria of trading at or near cash -- so the speculative juices might not run dry. You have to give this speculative stock until April at least, the end of its fiscal 2009, when it says it will become profitable -- if it doesn't recover by then, you should throw in the towel."

AMD Unveils New Profit Goals
11/13/08 - 06:13 PM EST

SAN FRANCISCO -- Meet the new Advanced Micro Devices(AMD Quote - Cramer on AMD - Stock Picks).

Thursday, giving investors the first detailed look at the financial underpinnings and strategic plan that will guide the company through the most significant reorganization in its history.
With the global economy unraveling, and the interestingly timed Intel(INTC Quote - Cramer on INTC - Stock Picks) sales warning hours earlier confirming the dismal state of demand for PCs, AMD is re-inventing itself amid a difficult and uncertain business environment.

"It is stormy out there ...we all want to forget October," Chief Financial Officer Bob Rivet told the audience gathered in Sunnyvale, Calif., for its annual analyst day. But he said he was confident the storm would pass, although he held off on updating the company's financial guidance until early next month, when Rivet is scheduled to speak at an investor conference.

Instead, Rivet and the rest of AMD's top brass filled in key gaps about what AMD will look like once it completes the spinoff of its chip manufacturing arm, slated to occur in mid-January.

Besides ceasing to manufacturing its chips in-house, AMD 2.0 will focus on offering value-oriented products for the masses rather than chasing the performance-hungry crowd -- and most importantly, executives stressed, it will be profitable.

"We've collectively had enough of losing money. And we're looking forward to hearing the cash register start ringing," said CEO Dirk Meyer.

AMD has lost more than $5 billion over the past eight quarters. But the manufacturing spinoff and various cuts to operating expenses -- including the most recent layoff of 500 workers -- means that AMD is now officially capable of breaking even with $1.5 billion in quarterly revenue.

The break-even target is not on an operating basis, as AMD has previously qualified it, but on the bottom line. And Rivet said breaking even is the conservative scenario, with net income equivalent to 8% of revenue achievable.

GIF89aRelated Articles RF Micro Chief Keeping an Eye on Costs AMD Relying on Chip Do-Over Applied Materials to Cut 12% of Workforce Market Activity Advanced Micro Devices Incorporated| AMD UPIntel Corporation| INTC UPNVIDIA Corporation| NVDA UPSustaining that profit, however, will require that AMD keep a tight lid on expenses.
As a fabless chip vendor, AMD's gross margin will be significantly lower than in its past life. Rivet pegged the company's new gross margin at 40%, but even Rivet's more optimistic scenario of 45% is significantly below the mid-to-high-50% levels it hit only a few years ago.

Shares of AMD finished Thursday's regular trading session up 5%, or 13 cents, $2.70 amid a broad market rally.

AMD also released its new quad-core server processor, dubbed Shanghai on Thursday, and the chipmaker cited strong support for the chip by computer vendors, including Dell(DELL Quote - Cramer on DELL - Stock Picks), Hewlett-Packard(HPQ Quote - Cramer on HPQ - Stock Picks) and IBM(IBM Quote - Cramer on IBM - Stock Picks).

After AMD's disastrous launch of Barcelona, its previous server chip that suffered from delays and a technical glitch, AMD cited the Shanghai release as proof that it has gotten its act back together.

But AMD appeared to have backed off one of its other key projects: a chip, sometimes referred to as Fusion, that combines the microprocessor and the graphics processor.

Instead of releasing the first Fusion chip in 2010, AMD said it will now wait until 2011. This will allow the company to build Fusion with circuits that measure 32 nanometers, instead of with the 45-nanometer-sized circuits its chips will sport for the next two years.

AMD's Randy Allen said the integrated graphics/microprocessor chip would be a much more compelling product with 32-nanometer circuits.

GIF89aRelated Articles RF Micro Chief Keeping an Eye on Costs AMD Relying on Chip Do-Over Applied Materials to Cut 12% of Workforce Market Activity Advanced Micro Devices Incorporated| AMD UPIntel Corporation| INTC UPNVIDIA Corporation| NVDA UPThe new timeline would mean the first example of Fusion appears more than four years after AMD acquired Canadian graphics chipmaker ATI for $5.4 billion. The Fusion project was one of the principle reasons for the controversial deal, which saddled AMD with billions of dollars in debt and nearly drove the company to bankruptcy.
Of course, the traditional graphics accelerator business that AMD acquired with ATI has recently proven one to be the company's best performers, growing revenue 40% year over year in the third quarter, and stealing market share from graphics rival Nvidia(NVDA Quote - Cramer on NVDA - Stock Picks).

AMD also provided details on a major hole in its product lineup -- a processor for the popular new breed of netbooks, which are miniature laptop-like devices designed for Web surfing and email.

Intel cornered the market for these devices with the release of its Atom chip earlier this year.

But AMD said it will enter the market in the first half of 2009 by offering one of its existing microprocessors alongside its graphics and chipset technology to netbook vendors. AMD said its so-called Yukon product will allow computer makers to create netbooks that don't sacrifice performance as much as with Intel's Atom processor.

AMD also said it will have a specially designed processor for netbooks, based on the Bobcat processor that was rumored to have been killed, in 2011.

Netbooks are one of the bright spots in the PC market, as consumers and corporations cut back on spending. But AMD's Rivet said the company believes industrywide unit shipments of PC microprocessors will still manage to increase 4% to 5% in 2009, excluding contributions from the new netbook category.

GIF89aRelated Articles RF Micro Chief Keeping an Eye on Costs AMD Relying on Chip Do-Over Applied Materials to Cut 12% of Workforce Market Activity Advanced Micro Devices Incorporated| AMD UPIntel Corporation| INTC UPNVIDIA Corporation| NVDA UP"We're going to grow better than that," Rivet said, citing the company's new lineup of microprocessor and graphics products.
"I'd rather be in that position going into a storm than not having new products," said Rivet.
Um abraço e bons negócios.

The Chip That Must Save AMD
By Nicholas Carlson
November 13, 2008: 07:52 AM ET

(alleyinsider.com) -- Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) stock stopped trading at $2.57 yesterday, down 13%. Only in November 2007, that price was $13.27. So today's news -- that the company is about to release a new chip named Shanghai -- comes at a particularly crucial time.

The chip is supposed to be more energy-efficient and be better at running "virtualization," a software trick that allows servers to do more work -- if their processors can keep up.

Customers who have tried Shanghai seem to like it. "We knew the performance results would be good, but they exceeded our expectations," HP exec Paul Gottsegen told the Wall Stret Journal. Dell executives say they appreciate Shanghai's energy efficiency. Both companies will buy the chip. So will Dell, Sun Microsystems Inc. and International Business Machines Corp.

AMD CFO: No Change In Outlook At This Time

November 13, 2008: 02:54 PM EST

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) won't change its financial guidance in light of the outlook cuts Wednesday by larger rival Intel Corp. (INTC), said Chief Financial Officer Bob Rivet, speaking Thursday at the AMD analyst conference.
And while Rivet said he wouldn't comment on Intel's change in outlook, he will provide an update on AMD's outlook in the first week of December during his presentation at an investor conference.

After falling as low as 11% to $2.30 earlier in Thursday's session, AMD shares were recently up 5 cents, or 1.6%, to $2.61.

On Wednesday, chip giant Intel slashed its fourth-quarter revenue view by as much as 20% because of "significantly weaker-than-expected demand," sending shares of the tech bellwether to 12-year lows and further rocking an already roiled stock market.

Intel shares have recovered slightly from earlier lows, recently trading up 1.3% to $13.70.

Broadcom to Buy AMD's Digital TV Business
Advanced Micro Devices IncBy Reuters | 25 Aug 2008 | 11:56 AM ET Font size: Chip maker Broadcom said it would buy AMD's digital television chip business for $192.8 million in cash to enter the market for cheaper television sets.

AMD [AMD 5.93 0.12 (+2.07%) ] shares rose after the news but Broadcom shares [BRCM 26.17 -1.25 (-4.56%) ] fell after it said the deal would hurt earnings in the first year.

However, Stifel Nicolaus analyst Cody Acree applauded the agreement, saying it opens high-volume, high-growth consumer markets for Broadcom's TV chip unit.

"If Broadcom gets into a lower end DTV box, it allows them to target markets like China, India and Brazil," said Acree, adding that sales of cheaper televisions could be lifted by economic uncertainty among consumers.

After the deal, Broadcom would be selling chips for television sets with screens of up to 20 inches priced around $200 to $300. Broadcom, which makes chips for a range of consumer electronics including cell phones and set-top boxes, had previously focused on chips for more expensive TVs.

The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter and is forecast to cut Broadcom's full year 2009 net earnings per share by a range of 4 cents to 5 cents, including 2 cents of stock-based compensation, the company said. It expects the impact on earnings to lessen and "approach neutrality" by the fourth quarter of 2009.

Broadcom said the deal would not change its long-term, gross margin target range of 49.5 percent to 51.5 percent.

Acree said the purchase price was "relatively cheap" for Broadcom as it is less than the unit generated in revenue for the last year, according to his estimates. Acree said it made sense for AMD, which needs to focus on its main business of graphics chips and computer chips.

AMD, which trails behind far-larger rival Intel [INTC 22.97 -0.52 (-2.21%) ] in the computer microprocessor market, has reported seven straight quarterly net losses and is developing a new strategy for manufacturing.

Broadcom said it planned to offer jobs to 530 AMD employees, about 90 percent of whom are engineers.

It said the boards of each company had approved the deal, which does not require a shareholder vote but does need regulatory approval.

Broadcom also said it may record a one-time charge for purchased in-process research-and-development expenses related to the acquisition in the quarter in which the transaction closes but said the amount, if any, had yet to be determined.

Broadcom shares were down 95 cents at $26.47 in late morning trading on Nasdaq. Shares in AMD were up 26 cents to $6.07 on the New York Stock Exchange. Its shares were still about 21 percent lower than mid-June levels.

UPDATE: Analyst Says AMD Gaining Ground Vs. Intel, Nvidia

By Benjamin Pimentel

SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones) -- Shares of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. rose Friday morning after an analyst said the chipmaker appeared to be gaining some ground on rivals Intel Corp. and Nvidia Corp.

But Craig Berger of Friedman, Billings, Ramsey & Co. also said AMD's stated goal to revamp its manufacturing operations, a change dubbed "asset lite," has become more important as the chip giant potentially faces another "cash crunch."

AMD (AMD) was up about 1.6% at $5.85 in early trading after analyst Craig Berger of Friedman, Billings, Ramsey & Co. said the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chip giant's products appear to be "gaining traction.'

In a research note, Berger said AMD has seen "increasing yields and shipments on triple- and quad-core products" which has led to "a small bit of momentum shifts back from Intel (INTC)."

Berger also noted that AMD is "clearly gaining market share in graphics chips from Nvidia (NVDA), a known among investors in our opinion, though we believe the magnitude of share gains may be better than generally understood."

However, Berger also noted AMD's ongoing financial problems which analysts said would be eased by the company's stated goal to make major changes in its manufacturing operations, in a plan dubbed 'asset lite.'

Analysts have speculated that AMD plans turn more of its manufacturing operations to contractors in a bid to cut cost, although the company has yet to release details of the strategy.

"'Asset-Lite' still of greatest importance in order to avoid a dilutive capital raise, though deal specifics remain challenging," Berger wrote. " Stepping back from the very near term, getting its 'asset-lite' deal done is of paramount importance in order for AMD to avoid raising additional capital and diluting current shareholders."

"AMD could be facing another cash crunch in coming quarters as it has taken on $5 billion of debt and burned through a lot of cash," he added.

Fechou a subir 8%

A notícia:

AMD Gains on Analyst's Upgrade,
But Nasdaq Continues to Drop

Advanced Micro Devices shares edged higher Thursday on an analyst's upgrade, while the Nasdaq Composite Index extended its losses after the previous session's dive.

AMD grew 28 cents to $13.94 on the New York Stock Exchange after Stifel Nicolaus lifted its rating to "buy" from "neutral." The chip maker's stock price already reflects several challenges the company faces, analyst Cody Acree said, including the probable delay of the Barcelona processor and market-share gains by Intel.
