AMD to spin off its manufacturing units
Saddled with debt, chip-maker AMD to spin off factories with investors in Abu Dhabi
NEW YORK (AP) -- In a move to dramatically cut costs and better compete with Intel Corp., chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. said Tuesday it will spin off its factories into a new joint venture with investors in the Persian Gulf state of Abu Dhabi.
The deal should shore up AMD's finances and let it focus on the design and development of computer chips. The new venture, to be based in the U.S. and called Foundry Co., will absorb AMD's manufacturing plants, including two in Dresden, Germany.
In conjunction with the spin off, Abu Dhabi's investment arm, Mubadala Development Co., will invest $314 million to more than double its current stake in AMD to 19.3 percent from 8.1 percent.
Another entity backed by the Persian Gulf state, Advanced Technology Investment Co., will invest $2.1 billion for a stake in Foundry Co., which also will assume about $1.2 billion of AMD's existing debt. Advanced Technology Investment then plans to contribute between $3.6 billion and $6 billion to Foundry Co. over the next five years to fund the expansion of the company's chip-making capacity. That plan includes the construction of a new facility in Saratoga County, New York.

Depois de 1 ano desastroso, tem de novo produtos competitivos e está a reestruturar-se, vendendo áreas não centrais do negócio para se financiar.

Olá. Eu acompanho-a, de tal forma que acabei de lhe fazer um short. Pode ser uma jogada arriscada mas atingiu o topo do que eu havia definido como um pequeno canal de resistência. Isto junto aos volumes decrescentes, pareceu-me uma boa oportunidade.

AMD's New Super-Fast Graphics Card Comes With Bullish Predictions

The prediction came compliments of Neil Dessau, senior VP-chief marketing officer of Advanced Micro Devices, who said the worlds of film and video games are about to fuse. Hailing this new era as "Cinema 2.0" at New York nightlife spot Marquee yesterday at what was essentially a glorified press conference to introduce the company's new super-fast graphics card (the ATI RadeonTM HD 4800 X2), he said advances in technology will allow movies to be more interactive and video games to be increasingly lifelike. Playing a movie at home, users can change plots, interact with characters and even create new endings.
Video-game developers previously had to water down a film's art assets and could only make use of a more limited technology. But more powerful computing means they can now use art directly from the film.

In addition to photo-realistic games, directors can make use of the technology when setting up shots. They can make real-time changes in plot points -- by changing lighting, camera angles or moving assets. The technology can allow a director to envision his film in a highly realistic way -- even using virtual actors who can endlessly redo scenes with a variety of natural facial expressions.
Jules Urbach, founder of Otoy and LightStage, computer graphics and 3D rendering firms, respectively, said the new technology allows for highly detailed computer-graphics modeling. He described a complex process that allow 32,000 points per inch to realistically capture the way light falls, the drape of clothing and a fluidly accurate 360-degree movement.
Capturing these details is only one aspect of the technology. Mr. Urbach's third firm, "Jules World," is partnering with Image Metrics to develop high-quality visual animation. They are able to take a video of an actor and translate it into a virtual actor completely independent of any performance. Using this technology, he said it is possible to bring back actors from the past and realistically put them in new films. Or use virtual actors instead of real ones.

AMD CEO Ruiz steps down
SAN FRANCISCO — After posting a quarterly loss of $1.19 billion, AMD switched chief executives Thursday, pushing CEO Hector Ruiz into the boardroom and replacing him with second-in-command Dirk Meyer.
The company cast the move as the product of a two-year succession plan. Its shares closed up 4.74 percent at $5.30, but were was down 7 percent in after hours trading. Its shares are down from $16.19 a share a year ago.
AMD noted in a press release that Meyer, 46, a 12-year-veteran of the company, is associated with the development of the company's highly successful series of Athlon chips.

FOR YEARS the chip industry had only one story: AMD's David pitted against Intel's Goliath, as the two Silicon Valley firms fought it out in the market for microprocessors that power PCs and servers. But a flurry of announcements this week shows that things are no longer so simple, and chipmakers that once ruled separate markets have started to come into conflict.
Intel has long dominated the market for PC and server chips, but there are two other big classes of processors: those for high-end graphics and for mobile phones. Most graphics chips are made by ATI Technologies (now part of AMD) and Nvidia; most mobile handsets are powered by processors based on technology from ARM Holdings, a British chip-design company.
These markets have been largely separate because different processors need to be good at different things: PC chips must be able to run ever more complex software; graphics chips have to be good at rapidly crunching data in parallel streams; and handset chips must balance performance with power consumption. But the borders between these markets are blurring as the PC matures and portable devices become more elaborate and capable.
To avoid getting stuck in a maturing market, Intel has branched out by developing Atom, a new family of low-power chips for “mobile internet devices” (MIDs, bigger than smartphones), “netbooks” (very small laptops) and “nettops” (cheap, stripped-down desktop PCs). Intel unveiled the first examples at a trade show in Taipei this week, and said that it is already having problems meeting demand. The firm also wants a bigger share of the profitable graphics-chip business. It intends to beef up the graphics abilities of its processors and will one day start selling specialised graphics chips.
AMD is taking similar steps. In 2006 it bought ATI for $5.4 billion in order to put advanced graphics into its microprocessor chips. This week the firm unveiled Puma, a new line of chips for small laptops, which includes technology from ATI for better graphics. Puma is supposed to revive AMD's fortunes after a series of mishaps. If Intel's Atom is a success, AMD is also expected to launch something similar.
With Intel and AMD encroaching on its territory, Nvidia, also based in Silicon Valley, is fighting back. It wants its increasingly sophisticated chips to be used not just to generate the graphics in video games, for instance, but also for other demanding tasks, such as decoding video or manipulating photos. It offers tools to make it easier to develop software for its chips. As for the new market in powerful portable devices, Nvidia intends to tackle it from both ends. It recently teamed up with Via, a Taiwanese chipmaker that specialises in low-power processors for laptops. And this week it announced a line of chips for MIDs called Tegra, which are based on technology from ARM and are supposed to be particularly good for watching videos and playing games.
Companies that use ARM's designs to make chips for mobile phones, such as Texas Instruments (TI), Qualcomm and Samsung, are not sitting still. As Intel and AMD move down into their market, they are trying to move up, by challenging Intel in the market for small laptops and MIDs.
Industry analysts say it is hard to predict how all this will turn out. A big question is whether MIDs, netbooks and nettops will be as successful as many predict, says Dean McCarron of Mercury Research, a market-research firm. And it is uncertain whether low-power PC chips or beefed up mobile-phone chips will be more successful in these new intermediate categories, says Nathan Brookwood of Insight64, a consultancy. PC chips can run lots of popular software, and are familiar to armies of programmers. Mobile-phone chips use less power—for the moment, at least.
As the battle unfolds, mergers may ensue. Already there are rumours that Nvidia could combine with either AMD or Via. With chipmakers trying to muscle in on each other's territory, competition in the industry is suddenly heating up.

Animada pelo anúncio de lançamento de um novo chipset para portáteis fez hoje uma boa vela com bom volume.
Isto é importante porque mais de metade do mercado de PCs é dos portáteis e até aqui a Intel tinha quase o monopólio com o chipset Centrino.
(chipset = CPU + GPU + North Bridge + South Bridge + WiFi)
A AMD é agora concorrencial porque tem melhores capacidades gráficas vindas da ATI.
Se nos próximos dias continuar em alta e passar dos 7.5 e sobretudo os 8.1 é um excelente sinal de entrada.

Hoje quebrou os 7.2 mas pouco pronunciado e o volume foi fraquinho. É pouco convincente.

A Daamit parece estar a recuperar. Finalmente tem uma nova gama de produtos competitivos e promete inovações interessantes (AMD plans 12-core server chip for 2010)
Tecnicamente está a atacar a resistência nos 7.2 e se a quebrar, bem como nos 8.1 a seguir, tem caminho aberto para chegar aos "bons velhos tempos" nos 12.
