Emcore 1st-Quarter Loss Widens on Higher Costs, but Shares Rise Sharply on Revenue Forecast

NEW YORK (AP) -- Emcore Corp. shares soared Thursday after the chip maker reported a wider loss for its fiscal first quarter, but said it expects revenue to jump this year because of deals to supply solar systems in four countries.

Late Wednesday, the Albuquerque, N.M., company said its fiscal 2008 first-quarter loss widened 9 percent, as costs rose.

For the three months ended Dec. 31, Emcore lost $14.5 million or 28 cents per share, compared with a loss of $13.3 million or 26 cents per share in the prior-year period.

Excluding stock options and one-time items, the company lost 13 cents per share, compared with a loss of 15 cents per share in the 2007 period.

Sales rose 21 percent to $46.9 million from $38.6 million a year ago.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected a loss of 7 cents per share on sales of $49.3 million. Analyst estimates did not reflect stock options, and typically exclude one-time charges.

Operating expenses rose to $23.6 million from $19.1 million, while the cost of product revenue rose to $35.5 million from $30.9 million.

Emcore, which makes high-speed chips for solar cells and optical components for high-speed communications networks, said during a conference call to discuss its results that it expects fiscal second quarter revenue of $56 million to $57 million. That represents an increase of 41 percent to 44 percent over its second-quarter revenue of $39.7 million in the prior-year period. Analysts forecast revenue of $56.2 million for the quarter.

The company predicted fiscal-year revenue between $265 million to $285 million, 56 percent to 68 percent higher than its fiscal year 2007 revenue of $170.1 million, and well above the average analyst estimate of $245.4 million.

Emcore said it expects calendar year revenue at $340 million and 2009 revenue of between $450 million and $475 million.

The company said it has started the year on a positive note, developing components for large solar power systems to be used in Canada, South Korean, Spain and the U.S.

Roth Capital Partners analyst Dave Kang said he was "more than pleased" with the company's guidance. "The 2009 guidance reflects that the company will be on a significant growth trajectory," Kang said in a note to clients. He noted that the 2009 revenue guidance did not include projects in California.

Kang was concerned mostly about issues Emcore had with suppliers. Delays with some capital equipment caused the $3 million revenue shortfall, compared with Wall Street expectations, in the first quarter, he said.

He also noted that backlog had increased about 5 percent in the first quarter. "We believe this number will be going up significantly in the next few quarters, as recently announced major solar contracts are not reflected in the current number," the analyst said.
