Alcatel-Lucent wins 'large' DSL order from Vodafone Spain

PARIS, Jan. 28, 2008 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) -- Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) said it won a contract from Vodafone (NYSE:VOD) Group's Spanish unit to supply a DSL network in large cities across the country.

No financial details were disclosed, but a group spokesman told Agence France-Presse that the order is a 'large contract'.

The network, to be installed in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Valladolid and Malaga, will be used to maintain bandwidth levels on Vodafone Spain's 3G network.

Cascais, 16 de Novembro de 2007 — A empresa analista industrial Gartner colocou a Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris e NYSE: ALU) na posição de líder no seu “Magic Quadrant for Contact Center Infrastructure, EMEA, 2007”, publicado a 30 de Outubro de 2007, da autoria de Drew Kraus e Steve Blood.

“O apoio da infraestrutura de voz IP é mais comum na Europa, embora algumas regiões da Europa de Leste, consideradas como mercados emergentes, constituam novas oportunidades de crescimento, geradas pelo reforço da sua economia e a adopção do outsourcing ao nível dos contact centers. Segundo o relatório da Gartner, “Os líderes são fornecedores de grande viabilidade, com ofertas alargadas, uma quota de mercado significativa, ampla cobertura geográfica dos mercados, uma visão clara de como devem evoluir os requisitos dos contact centers, e um registo actualizado das entregas de produtos efectuadas pelo contact centers. Ocupam uma posição favorável na actual gama de ofertas de produtos, e deverão continuar a fornecer produtos pioneiros. O serviço assentará na arquitectura líder TPSDA (Triple Play Service Delivery Architecture) da Alcatel-Lucent e na plataforma de IPTV e multimédia Microsoft Mediaroom. A MTS Allstream detém actualmente a maior base instalada de assinantes de TV digital no Canadá e foi um dos primeiros fornecedores de serviços do mundo a lançar este tipo de serviço. Esta implementação de próxima geração vai suportar uma base alargada de assinantes e permitir à MTS Allstream lançar-se em novos mercados.

Ao abrigo deste contrato, a Alcatel-Lucent vai fornecer a sua arquitectura TPSDA e vai realizar a integração completa da rede. A solução inclui uma rede IP/MPLS baseada no 7750 Service Router (SR) e uma rede de acesso de banda larga baseada no 7330 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fiber-to-the-Node (ISAM FTTN). USD71 million contract highlights P1’s leadership in the commercial introduction of WiMAX 802.16e wireless broadband technology in South East Asia

Paris and Kuala Lumpur, January 29, 2008 – Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (P1) has selected Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext and NYSE: ALU) to deploy and manage one of the world’s first large-scale commercial WiMAX networks to date in the 2.3 gigahertz (GHz) spectrum band, a deal valued at USD71 million for Phase 1 of deployment. This project highlights P1’s preeminent position in the commercial introduction of WiMAX 802.16e technology and helps establish Malaysia as one of Asia-Pacific’s wireless broadband leaders.

The contract was signed today at a ceremony witnessed by YB Dato’ Sri Dr Lim Keng Yaik, Minister of Energy, Water and Communications. Under the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will supply P1, a subsidiary of Green Packet Berhad and WiMAX license-holder, with a complete, turn-key, end-to-end integrated WiMAX wireless broadband solution, including base stations, wireless access controllers, and an operation and maintenance center. Alcatel-Lucent also will be responsible for designing, supplying, constructing, installing, testing, commissioning, integrating, optimizing and maintaining P1’s WiMAX network.

Deployment is already underway in Klang Valley, Penang and Johor and will expand rapidly throughout West Malaysia. P1 plans to provide WiMAX coverage for 25 percent of the population in Malaysia (6.5 million people) by the end of 2008 and 40 percent of the population in Malaysia (10 million people) by the end of 2010. P1 expects to provide WiMAX coverage to 60 percent of the nation’s population - including urban, suburban and rural areas - within five years.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, P1’s CEO Michael Lai said, “The advent of wireless broadband has revolutionized communication and WiMAX is set to change the broadband landscape even further, making the Internet mobile and more personal. Our customers will soon have access to advanced services such as voice over IP (VoIP), high-speed Internet access and other data services instantly and while on the go using WiMAX-enabled devices without being tied down by wires.

“We are convinced that WiMAX, which is an all-IP solution, has the right DNA - that is device, network and application - for a successful platform,” Lai added. “We selected Alcatel-Lucent for this project because we are confident that they will deliver seamless wireless communications network that is poised to deliver fresh new services, improved applications and compelling content. The new WiMAX 2.3Ghz service will facilitate significantly faster wireless communications and provide a strong foundation to support the further development and growth of information and communications technology in Malaysia. It also supports the government’s National Broadband Plan to foster economic progress through the establishment of a knowledge-based economy.

Paris, January 29, 2008 - Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced it has signed a contract with mcel, the largest mobile operator in Mozambique, for the deployment of a 3G network. With this deployment, Mozambique becomes the fourth country in the Southeast Africa region to launch 3G services, highlighting mcel’s position as a leading-edge player in Africa’s mobile market. The deployment will take place in the dense urban centres and suburban areas of Maputo, Beira and Nampula, Mozambique’s first, second and third biggest cities.

The new wireless network based on UMTS/HSPA (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service/High Speed Packet Access) technology will enable mcel to expand its voice and data offerings to key customers and tourists with high-quality mobile voice and high-speed broadband data services such as video streaming, access to corporate e-mail and intranets, and many other new applications. Peak data transfer will reach speeds of up to 14.4 megabits per second with a compatible device. In addition to providing powerful mobile services, the introduction of the 3G network will enable mcel to compete in the fixed broadband market because of the exceptional broadband data throughput rate.

The equipment supplied by Alcatel-Lucent – base stations, radio network controllers(RNC), wireless network management system and radio network planning tools - will be deployed in both indoor and outdoor environments and will include innovative Remote Radio Head technology that allows base station components to be distributed in multiple locations, enabling more flexible deployments by reducing real estate and space requirements. Alcatel-Lucent also will provide installation and commissioning services and will expand the existing transmission network to support the increased bandwidth requirements of the 3G service offerings.

Cairo, Egypt and Paris, France, January 31, 2008 — Telecom Egypt (TE) (Ticker: ETEL.CA; TEEG.LN), the incumbent telecom operator in Egypt, and Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced they have signed a USD125 million contract to deploy a new submarine cable network linking Sidi Kerir in Egypt to Marseille in France. Named TE North, the project will enable Telecom Egypt to expand international connectivity, providing diversity from existing cable routes. Additionally, the TE North submarine cable system will help Telecom Egypt enhance its network capacity to operate as a wholesale carrier to other operators and expand its service offering to businesses and consumers.

Spanning 3,100 km, TE North can deliver an ultimate capacity of 128 x 10Gbit/s on eight fiber pairs, which makes it one of the largest cable systems in the region. As a result, Telecom Egypt will be able to meet the growing demand for broadband services of its business and residential users at more affordable costs. Moreover, it will further establish Egypt’s role as international communication hub between Europe and Asia/Africa, and it will also reinforce the city of Marseille as a communications hub with ‘open access’ facilities.

“Egypt has a young population with a growing demand for more and more capacity. In addition Telecom Egypt has decades long tradition of being the partner of choice to all Asia-Europe submarine cable systems, by providing the infrastructure for crossing from Red to Mediterranean Seas.
