(Adds details, background)

PARIS, April 27 (Reuters) - France Telecom (FTE.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) reported a 6.7 percent rise in underlying first-quarter earnings on Thursday, broadly in line with forecasts as it received a boost from the Spanish Amena mobile business acquired last year.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation

(EBITDA) rose to 4.67 billion euros ($5.80 billion) from 4.376 billion euros in the same period last year.

The average market forcast was for 4.635 billion euros, according to a Reuters poll of 12 analysts.

France Telecom, Europe's second largest telecoms operator in terms of sales, is battling cut-throat competition from smaller, more nimble rivals such Iliad (ILD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) and Neuf Telecom.

The group confirmed its full-year targets, including generating cash flow of at least 7 billion euros, and also said it planned to launch new Internet and mobile services under the Orange brand name, the name of its mobile unit.

Iliad and Neuf this month beat the French operator by being first to launch a service that allows mobile users to cut their phone bills by latching on to a Wi-Fi network.

Such new service represents a threat for the future revenues of mobile operators such as market leader Orange, as some 30-40 percent of mobile calls are made from home where there can be a Wi-Fi network.

France Telecom, which issued a profit warning in January, has seen its shares lose more than 20 percent in the past six months and more than 12 percent so far this year.

The stock has underperformed the DJ Stoxx European telecoms sector index by more than 12 percent since the beginning of 2006 and is trading at a discount to many of its peers.

The shares are on a price earnings ratio of about 9 times for 2006, below that of Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) which is on 11 times and Telefonica (TEF.MC: Quote, Profile, Research) which is on about 14 times.

The group generated first-quarter revenues of 12.813 billion euros in the three months to March 31, which compared with a Reuters forecast of 12.709 billion euros and came above the 11.621 billion euros registered in the year-ago period on a published basis.
