Premiere Agrees With Telekom on Sharing Internet Soccer Rights

May 19 (Bloomberg) -- Premiere AG, Germany's biggest pay- television company, said it reached an agreement with Deutsche Telekom AG on sharing the Internet broadcasting rights for the country's top soccer league.

The arrangement will allow Premiere to continue showing Bundesliga matches to some of its 3.5 million subscribers, after the company in December had lost the pay-TV broadcast rights to cable company Unity Media.

``With this cooperation, Premiere can continue to present all games of the First and Second Bundesliga,'' Premiere, based in Unterfoehring, near Munich, said in a statement to the Frankfurt exchange today.

Shares of Premiere, which relies on sporting events and movies to attract customers, slumped 42 percent on a single day in December when the company lost the pay-TV rights to show matches of the Bundesliga soccer competition. Deutsche Telekom, Europe's biggest phone company, purchased the Internet rights.

Only Premiere subscribers with a new interactive digital receiver will be able to watch the matches on their television set through the Internet signal. The company didn't say today how many of its 3.5 million subscribers currently have such a interactive digital receiver.

Deutsche Telekom, whose fixed-line phone service revenue shrank for three consecutive years, is betting digital TV will provide a new source of revenue.

UPDATE 3-Bundesliga dampens Premiere's hopes for live soccer
Fri Apr 7, 2006 5:07 PM BST6

By Marie-Louise Moller

FRANKFURT, April 7 (Reuters) - Premiere's chances of salvaging its coverage of Bundesliga soccer looked slimmer than ever on Friday when the German soccer league said only rights holder Arena could broadcast the games live on TV.

Premiere's shares fell as much as 5 percent on the news and closed 3.6 percent lower at 13.80 euros.

After weeks of speculation in the German media that Premiere would manage somehow to strike a deal to continue to show Germany's most popular sport, the soccer league seemed to dash those hopes in a newsletter to the media.

When asked if there could be more than one pay-TV offer for Bundesliga games in the coming season, soccer league chief Christian Seifert said: "No, the situation is clear. Arena has the live rights for free as well as pay-TV."

Analysts said Premiere's main challenge now was to cut the rate at which customers cancel subscriptions later this year when it stops showing Bundesliga games after losing the rights to Arena, the sports rights unit of cable operator Unity Media.

"This cements what the market already knew. We do not think Premiere will have any Bundesliga content starting this August," said Edward Steel, analyst with Morgan Stanley.

"The main challenge is to prevent churn as much as possible from its customer base through price cuts and intelligent marketing of their products," he added, referring to the rate at which customers quit their contracts.

Arena has the rights to the soccer games for the next three seasons starting this August.

The DFL will receive 420 million euros ($512 million) for both the TV and Internet rights per season over the next three years, of which Arena will be paying the bulk.

Seifert added that the DFL had struck deals with public broadcasters ARD and ZDF as well as sports channel DSF to show highlights of the games.

COOPERATION WITH D.TELEKOM?

Premiere, whose shares dropped over 40 percent in December when the DFL gave the live TV rights to Arena, has been struggling to find a way to show the games in some form.

It has been talking to Deutsche Telekom, and last week German media reported that Premiere could agree a deal which would allow it to use the telecom group's Internet rights.

However, some analysts questioned how many customers Premiere could reach that way and how the technology would work.

"It is not 100 percent impossible, but the technical issues are by no means resolved," said Philip Guest, analyst with Exane BNP Paribas.

Deutsche Telekom plans to roll out Internet TV this year to Germany's 10 biggest cities and a further 40 cities at the end of 2008. It has said it expects to have 1 million customers for the service by that time.

This number could be boosted if Premiere and Deutsche Telekom were to strike an agreement under which the telecoms group could market its Internet TV product directly to the broadcaster's subscribers.

A source familiar with the situation said Premiere could theoretically also get a sublicensing agreement with Arena, but the sports rights unit has so far shown no inclination to cooperate with Premiere.

"I would say that it is very unlikely at this stage," said Guest at BNP Paribas.

Some analysts have estimated that Premiere could lose as many as a million or more of its 3.6 million subscribers if it stops showing premier Bundesliga games live.

But most say it is too early to call, highlighting the fact that the broadcaster still holds rights to Hollywood blockbusters and offers other top sports events such as European Champions League soccer.

Premiere shares climb on takeover speculation
Thursday 30 March 2006, 3:50am EST

FRANKFURT, March 30 (Reuters) - Shares of Premiere (PREGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) rose more than 8 percent on Thursday after a report that Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) could buy the German pay-TV broadcaster, although analysts said such a move was unlikely.

Premiere shares were up 7.6 percent at 15.06 euros by 0839 GMT, the leading gainer on Germany's midcap MDAX index <.MDAXI>. Earlier they had risen to 15.25 euros.

More than 1.46 million shares had traded, just below the 90-day trading average of 1.69 million shares.

Germany's www.manager-magazin.de, citing banking sources, reported on Wednesday that a takeover of Premiere by Deutsche Telekom could be possible.

"I think it is pretty unlikely," said one media analyst who requested anonymity. "Premiere does not have anything that is so valuable for Deutsche Telekom that it has to buy Premiere. Premiere is a takeover candidate, yes, but not for Deutsche Telekom."

Both Deutsche Telekom and Premiere declined to comment on Thursday.

The report also said the broadcaster was in talks with Deutsche Telekom on providing content for television over the Internet, which the telecoms group had already announced in February.

"We are not in talks only with Premiere on content but also other content makers," a Deutsche Telekom spokesman said.

Arena says not in talks with Premiere to share Bundesliga rights
03.27.2006

FRANKFURT (AFX) - Arena, the company that won the rights to broadcast Germany's Bundesliga football games, said it is not in talks with pay-TV broadcaster Premiere AG to share the TV rights.

'We are not in talks with Premiere over a sub-licensing (deal),' said Christoph Bellmer, Arena's head of technology and sales.

However, a Premiere spokesman said the company 'remains confident' it will be able to broadcast some Bundesliga games in the coming season.

He said the broadcaster is still in talks with companies that hold rights for the football games, without specifying further.

Arena in December won the rights to broadcast Bundesliga matches live on pay TV for the next three seasons starting this summer, in a severe blow to rival bidder Premiere, which has the exclusive rights for the current 2005/2006 season.

Premiere

por Rasputine1973 » 27/3/2006 1:11

Viva
