Bernanke's testimony: mainly reiterates FOMC statement, says he concurs
that "some further firming" of policy may be necessary; the most recent
evidence shows econ expansion "remains on track" and future decisions
"will be increasingly dependent on incoming data." However, tone of text
is benign. He says leveling of housing seems most likely rather than a
sharp contraction and notes the "benign performance of core inflation"
that he says is due to less energy dependence & low inflation
expectations. Says will "maintain continuity" with the Greenspan era.
Risks include energy prices, whether output overshoots sustainable path.
Bottom line: tame & vanilla, we'll wait for Q&A to see the 'real Ben.'
