12:21 Indesit Quarterly Profit Drops 21% on Higher Costs (Update3)
(Adds dividend payment in penultimate paragraph.)
By Chiara Remondini and Sara Gay Forden
Feb. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Indesit Co., Europe's third-largest
home-appliance maker, said fourth-quarter profit declined 21
percent because of increased prices for raw materials and
weakening demand in the U.K. and other countries.
Net income fell to 21.8 million euros ($26 million) from
27.5 million euros a year earlier, the Fabriano, Italy-based
company said today in a stock-exchange statement. A Bloomberg
survey of five analysts showed a median estimate of 14.4 million
euros. Sales climbed 3.5 percent to 841 million euros.
Profitability at Indesit and rivals including Electrolux AB
has been hurt by rising competition and higher prices for steel
and other raw materials used to make its appliances. Net income
at the Italian company, whose brands include Ariston and
Hotpoint, plunged by more than three-fifths in the previous
quarter.
``These results confirm our forecasts,'' Chief Executive
Officer Marco Milani said in today's statement. ``We brought our
raw materials costs for 2006 under control, thus limiting the
impact of any new price rises.''
Shares of Indesit rose 55 cents, or 6.2 percent, to 9.40
euros in Milan, their steepest gain since Oct. 30, 2003. The
stock slid 31 percent in 2005, the second-biggest loss in the
17-member Bloomberg Europe Home Furnishings Index, which fell
1.4 percent.
Production Transfer
Indesit, which changed its name from Merloni last year, is
moving some production to Eastern Europe from the western part
of the region in an effort to contain costs and boost
productivity. In 2004, the company opened plants in Poland and
Russia.
``In 2006, Indesit will benefit from the implementation of
the restructuring plan, particularly the transfer of
manufacturing plants to Eastern Europe,'' Paola Saglietti, an
analyst at Banca Akros SpA in Milan, wrote in a report before
the results were published. She has an ``accumulate'' rating on
the stock.
For all of 2005, net income fell 51 percent to 50.7 million
euros as sales dropped 1.2 percent to 3 billion euros. The
figures are preliminary and final figures are scheduled for
March 23.
Indesit will propose to pay a dividend this year
``substantially in line in value with the amount paid in 2005,''
the company said. Last year the appliance maker paid 0.361 euro
