Earnings Preview: Cisco Systems
Tuesday November 8, 5:07 pm ET
NEW YORK (AP) -- Cisco Systems Inc. reports its earnings for the fiscal first quarter after the closing bell Wednesday, Nov. 9. The following is a summary of expectations and key developments for the period.
EXPECTATIONS: In August, Cisco forecast its revenue at $6.56 billion for the three months ended Oct. 31. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial are looking for a profit of 24 cents per share and $6.58 billion in revenue.
ANALYST TAKE: Cisco, which makes equipment for networking computers and other devices, is expected to post results largely in line with current estimates, helped by product sales and an upswing in government spending. "Most of Cisco's enterprise peers reported strong September quarters and guided to seasonally normal December-quarter growth on solid enterprise demand, as well as some pockets of a slight federal rebound," Pacific Crest analyst Tim Daubenspeck wrote in a research note. "We expect solid end-of-year spending on Cisco's main carrier products -- routing, switching and metro optical."
QUARTER DEVELOPMENTS: Late in the quarter, Cisco announced plans to spend $1.1 billion -- its biggest foreign investment -- over the next three years to ramp up its operations in India. The company intends to almost triple its Indian work force to about 4,000 and may consider manufacturing some products there as well.
COMPETITORS: Technology spending dipped heavily after the dot-com crash but is regaining momentum as network infrastructure continues to grow. Cisco competes with companies like Avaya Inc., Juniper Networks Inc. and Nortel Networks Corp. for share of the networking pie.
STOCK PERFORMANCE: Cisco shares lost 8.9 percent during the quarter, and is down 7.4 percent so far this year. The stock has traded in a 52-week range of $16.83 to $20.35.

Obrigado

Cisco Shares Could Trade Higher After Q1 Report
Maya Roney, 11.01.05, 10:21 AM ET
Nikos Theodosopoulos of UBS Investment Research maintained a "neutral" rating and $20.50 price target on Cisco Systems (nasdaq: CSCO - news - people ), expecting in-line fiscal first-quarter 2006 results.
"We believe Cisco's solid balance sheet, dominant position in enterprise networking, and above-average growth should allow a modest premium to the market multiple," said the analyst.
Cisco reports fiscal first-quarter 2006 earnings on Nov. 9. Theodosopoulos expects earnings of 24 cents per share on revenue of $6.581 billion (flat sequentially and up 10% year-over-year).
UBS' reseller channel checks throughout first quarter 2006 suggest that Cisco is seeing relatively flattish sequential growth in LAN switching (40% of sales) while routers (22% of sales) were likely down sequentially (the firm estimates a 5% decline) due primarily to seasonal softness in service provider market (28% of sales). However, the channel checks suggest relative strength in low-end routers, which could offset some of the seasonal weakness in service providers.
"We would not be surprised to see the stock trade up slightly after the earnings report," said Theodosopoulos. "A slower ramp of new hires and favorable product mix-shift could provide for a 1 cent [per share earnings] upside."
