Gateway turns in $15.1 million profit

GTW Gateway climbed 34 cents, to $2.89, on positive reaction to the No. 3 PC company's report of a profit of $15.1 million, or 4 cents a share, on $1.02 billion in revenue. During the same period a year ago, Gateway lost $59 million, or 16 cents a share, on $915 million in revenue.

The results beat the estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call, which had forecast a profit of 3 cents a share on $1.01 billion in revenue.

Overall PC sales grew to 1.17 million units, up 25% from a year ago. Gateway officials attributed the increase in PC sales to gains in the U.S. retail market.

Retail sales accounted for 871,400 PCs and $601 million in revenue, while direct sales totaled 70,900 units, good for $132 million.

Gateway's professional segment recorded sales of 224,000 computers making up $286 million in revenue during the quarter.

The company has made its push into the professional segments one of its key focal points this year. Gateway Chief Executive Wayne Inouye said that growth in the company's professional segment, "is the most-significant event taking place" with the company since it bought eMachines and started a massive restructuring in early 2004.

A year ago, Gateway's results were impacted by $63 million in restructuring charges. Inouye said that for all practical purposes, "the restructuring is done."

Going forward, Gateway reiterated its full-year forecasts for a net profit between 11 cents and 13 cents a share, with revenue in a range of $3.9 billion to $4 billion. Gateway also said that beginning with its 2006 fiscal year, it would no longer give annual earnings and revenue forecasts.

Gateway Introduces 21-Inch High-Definition Widescreen Display With DCDi by Faroudja Technology at a Groundbreaking Price of $599
Thursday October 6, 8:00 am ET
The Gateway(R) FPD2185W Delivers Innovation With a Stunning Visual Experience for Increased Workflow Productivity, Personal Computing and Gaming

IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gateway Inc., the nation's third largest PC manufacturer, today introduced a new 21-inch widescreen LCD flat-panel display blending innovation with value. Packed with features, the Gateway® FPD2185W brings the benefits of high-definition viewing to anyone wanting a spectacular visual experience for work or play, priced at just $599.99.

The Gateway FPD2185W combines powerful performance with high-resolution display qualities, and is the first computer monitor to employ a new Genesis Microchip (Nasdaq: GNSS - News) controller with an integrated Emmy award-winning suite of DCDi® by Faroudja video processing technologies for stunning images with precise detail, color and motion.

The display also offers unsurpassed adaptability with all mainstream video input ports, a four-port powered USB 2.0 hub and an advanced Picture-in- Picture (PIP) display. This characteristic brings professional grade capabilities to numerous markets including business professionals, learning institutions, consumers and gamers.

"The Gateway FPD2185W display continues our focus on innovation," said William Diehl, vice president of product marketing, Gateway. "It embodies professional-grade design with next generation video technologies, outstanding performance and video quality clearly demonstrating the leading-edge solutions we're developing. More than just offering advanced features the display is ideal as a productivity tool with its widescreen, high-definition flat-panel capabilities that offer an elevated computing experience for an affordable price."

High Performance Merges with High Definition for Advanced Widescreen Capabilities

The Gateway FPD2185W, 21-inch widescreen display combines high-definition picture quality with excellent performance for an entirely new viewing experience. Designed with professional-grade engineering, the display meets workplace demands with enough advanced attributes to provide a stunning cinematic or gaming experience when the workday ends.

The display delivers significantly more viewing space via a 1680 x 1050 widescreen aspect ratio compared to the current standard 1280 x 1024 display. The Gateway FPD2185W leads the category with a best-in-class contrast ratio of 1000:1, a wide viewing angle of 178/178 and fast 8ms refresh rates. The display also offers advanced video processing technologies DCDi® by Faroudja, algorithms that were previously only made available in high-end home theater systems. The result removes jagged edges and makes Standard Definition (SD) video input look clear, sharp and crisp.

The Gateway FPD2185W also offers investment protection and long-term functionality with High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). The HDCP video content encryption chip is required for viewing high-definition content if the PC is running Microsoft's new operating system, Windows Vista. It also makes it compatible with cable and satellite high-definition video services.

The display offers benefits to multiple audiences due to its high performance attributes. Architectural drafting and sophisticated CAD/CAM design work is enhanced due to the monitor's fast refresh rates, contrast ratios and wide viewing angle. It is also ideal for professionals who require the best-in-class display technology-its high-resolution is ideal for photographers, graphic artists or medical professionals who need to view patient charts. Professionals will find the ability to view multiple applications or documents side-by-side extremely helpful; it allows financial analysts to easily compare spreadsheets, proof readers or copywriters to view and compare documents, and students to display full-page research documents while editing their reports simultaneously. It also provides a general overall improved quality for viewing Excel, PowerPoint and Word documents. Due to its extended viewing angle, high-brightness and broad selection of video inputs, the display is also ideal for use as a kiosk or for signage in a retail setting.

In addition to enhanced viewing properties, the display offers innovative screen rotating capabilities. Combined with the unique height adjustable stand that can be raised, lowered, rotated, swiveled and tilted, the Gateway FPD2185W includes Gateway's EzTune® software. The software automatically rotates the screen image when the monitor is alternated between landscape and portrait mode. Portrait mode makes reading Web pages easier by eliminating the need to scroll to see the entire page and offers a better experience for displaying photos in full-screen portrait mode. EzTune also provides on screen PC controls for adjusting monitor settings and to allow for software color calibration -- a feature that novice and professional photographers will appreciate.

Additional Powerful Features Bring Maximum Value and Flexibility

The Gateway FPD2185W can display an array of video content through numerous ports including Composite, S-Video, Component, VGA and Digital Video Interface (DVI) with HDCP. This flexibility provides an ideal viewing experience for everything from static digital pictures to high-definition- protected content and games.

The display can receive input from a desktop or notebook computer, external cable or satellite box tuner, DVD player, PVR, game console, or a video or digital camera. The five video ports are conveniently located at the back of the unit for easy access. Plus, a cord clip is provided for tucking cords out of sight. The monitor also includes a built-in, self-powered four- port USB 2.0 hub, making it easy to plug in a digital camera, MP3 player, keyboard, mouse or USB flash drive.

The Gateway FPD2185W offers advanced Picture-in-Picture (PIP) functionality allowing users to easily watch programming and work on a computer application simultaneously. Users can view cable, satellite TV, video or live news and sports feeds, extending the functionality of the computer monitor, which takes up less space than two displays and eliminates the cost of a TV.

The PIP images can be adjusted to various levels of transparency, allowing users to see any two video sources simultaneously. A convenient one button toggle between sources enables quick and easy viewing. In addition, the PIP's location on the screen can be easily moved and dynamically sized as needed.

"This new display is ultimately a no-compromise solution that meets the demands of today's unique multi-tasking environment. Busy professionals can study complex financial modeling while simultaneously monitoring Bloomberg stock market news. Consumers benefit from powerful professional features for an unrivaled gaming and cinematic experience. We believe everyone will appreciate its versatility, and will wonder why all monitors don't offer these capabilities," continued Diehl.

Optional Accessories Enhance Product Functionality
Gateway offers several key accessories for the new monitor including:

* An optional speaker bar attaches seamlessly to the bottom of the
display to provide integrated sound and dual headphone jacks, so two
students can view a presentation quietly and simultaneously.

* Optional cable locks physically help to protect the unit and speaker
bar by locking the monitor to the desk or by locking the speaker bar
to the monitor (key or combination available).

* The wall mount anchors the display to the wall to get the display up
and off the desk, freeing up space for other items.

The Gateway FPD2185W is available now through Gateway's multiple sales channels. To contact sales representatives for more information or to purchase the unit direct from Gateway, call 1-800-GATEWAY.
