WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Spending on U.S. construction projects increased 0.5% in April to a record $1.07 trillion annual rate, the Commerce Department estimated Wednesday.
Economists were forecasting a gain of 0.7% in April, according to a survey conducted by MarketWatch. Outlays in March were revised higher to a 0.6% gain from 0.5% previously.

Total construction outlays are up 8.2% in the past year. The figures are not adjusted for price changes.

Spending on private construction projects increased 0.8% in April to a record $828.9 billion annualized, led by a 1.3% increase in spending on nonresidential projects. Outlays for private nonresidential projects totaled $233.3 billion, the highest since May 2002.

Spending on private residential projects increased 0.6% in April to a record $595.6 billion. The boom in the housing market has been a major driver in the economy in the past three years, while spending on offices, factories, stores and other nonresidential uses has not kept pace.

Spending on housing has increased 13.3% in the past year, while spending on private nonresidential projects has climbed 5.3%, with most of the increase accounted for by higher prices for construction materials, land and labor.

Spending on public sector construction projects fell 0.4% in April despite a record level of outlays by state and local governments. State and local spending rose 0.2% to a record $222 billion. Spending by the federal government sank 7.9% to $16 billion.

In the past year, public construction spending is down 0.4%.

In the private sector, spending on commercial projects increased 3.8% in April while spending on offices increased 1.8%. Spending on power projects fell 3.5%.

In the public sector, spending on schools increased 2.9%. Spending on streets and highways fell 3.2%.
