FUTURES MOVERS: Crude rallies after supply data

DALLAS (MarketWatch) -- The June crude-oil contract shook off bearish U.S. inventory data to trade higher Wednesday morning on the New York Mercantile Exchange despite two reports of larger-than-expected increases in crude supplies.

Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at Alaron.com, said he believes the data may have already been priced into the energy futures. The June contract for crude fell 10% last week.

Crude for June delivery traded as low as $48.80 a barrel immediately after the reports and was last at $49.70, up 20 cents.

The Energy Department said U.S. crude inventories rose 2.6 million barrels for the week ended April 29, which places supplies above the upper end of the average range for this time of year. They're also the highest since the end of March 2002.

Meanwhile, the American Petroleum Institute said crude supplies were up 10.2 million barrels last week.

"The API's crude-oil inventory number is coming out of field," Flynn said. "I don't know where you'd put 10 million barrels of oil."

Gasoline inventories increased 2.2 million barrels, the Energy Department said. That puts supplies of the fuel at the upper end of the average range. The API said gasoline stocks rose 649,000 barrels.

Distillate fuel inventories, including heating oil, fell 300,000 barrels and are now in the lower half of the average range for this time of year, according to the Energy Department. The API said they fell 697,000 barrels.

June gasoline rose 0.36 cent to $1.463 a gallon. June heating oil added 0.5 cent to $1.441 a gallon.

IFR Markets expected the Energy Department to report increases of 1 to 2 million barrels in crude, gasoline and distillate inventories.

Fimat analysts expected U.S. crude supplies to rise by 2 million barrels in the week ended April 29. They were also looking for a 300,000-barrel increase in gasoline inventories, and for distillates, including heating oil, to expand by 1 million barrels.

Also on Nymex, May natural gas rose 8.5 cents to $6.60 per million British thermal units.

Banc of America Securities expects the Energy Department on Thursday to report a natural gas storage injection of 30 to 40 billion cubic feet for the week ended April 29.

"Temperatures last week, based on gas home heating customer weighted heating degree days, were about 62% cooler than last year, about 34% cooler than the 10-year average and about 74% cooler than the prior week," analyst Robert Morris said in a note to clients.

Fimat is looking for an increase in U.S. gas in storage of about 81 billion cubic feet.

"Lingering cold weather is continuing this week, giving some support to the bullish argument, despite the overwhelming storage situation," Kilduff said.

Against this backdrop, oil stocks rallied once again, sending the Amex Oil Index (XOI: news, chart, profile) higher by 0.3% to 815.37 points.
