Apple 2Q Net Up Sharply; Co Sees 3Q EPS, Revenue Above Views

CUPERTINO, Calif. -(Dow Jones)- Apple Computer Inc.'s (AAPL) second-quarter net income rose sharply, once again surpassing Wall Street and internal guidance, as the company continues to ride on its burgeoning iPod sales.
Apple, which plans to begin selling the next major version of its Macintosh operating system this month, also expects third-quarter earnings and revenue to beat current Wall Street predictions.
In a press release Wednesday, Apple Computer posted a profit of $290 million, or 34 cents a share, up from earnings of $46 million, or a split-adjusted 6 cents a share, a year ago.
The latest earnings easily beat the average 34 cent a share estimate of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call. They were also far higher than the split-adjusted 20 cents Apple forecasted in January.
Apple's first-quarter revenue was up 70% at $3.24 billion, with international sales accounting for about 40% of the quarterly revenue.
