VRSN reported Q4 revenue of $356 million and pro forma EPS of $0.21 per share, vs. the FC mean of $351 million in revenue and EPS of $0.20 per share.
VRSN said on its conference call tonight it expects Q1 revenue of $370 million, vs. the FC mean of $360 million. EPS is expected at $0.21 per share, in line with the Street view.
For 2005, the company expects revenue of $1.5 to $1.55 billion, up from prior guidance and in line to higher than the current Street view of $1.5 billion. EPS is expected at $0.90 per share, matching the FC mean.
VRSN crashed through the 28.85 level to an early evening low of 25. The stock rebounded quickly to the 27 level before again swooning back to about 25.50. It generated upside momentum back to 27 as it released guidance, but the outlook failed to hold the narrower downside. VRSN slimmed down through the 26.20 to 25.76 range in late trade.
Despite VRSN's better-than-expected results we're inclined to play the downside momentum off the stock on Thursday, particularly considering VRSN's solid session-to-session historical data.
We noted in a preview story ahead of tonight's report, VRSN has demonstrated a consistent level of posting wider next-day movement following after-hours earnings events. In fact, VRSN has closed next day trade with wider moves following its last three evening earnings reports.
On Oct. 20, VRSN ramped up 7.9% after the company beat expectations and guided higher. It soared in the Oct. 21 regular session, rising 19.5% by the closing bell.
VRSN was a downside mover the night of July 22, losing 4.4% after the company beat on sales but reported in-line EPS. It slid 4.8% by the close on July 23.
On April 22, VRSN advanced 5.3% in night trade following better-than-expected results. It gained 6.8% by the close on April 23.
With that level of consistency we would look to take advantage of any continued weakness early Thursday, targeting potential short entry points between 26.75 and 26.36, levels that saw some of the strongest sell volume tonight. It's likely, however, that VRSN opens pre-market trade south of these levels. More risk tolerant shorts may want to look at the 26.15 to 26 area if VRSN opens early trade below 26. Firm sell volume below this level could point to a break back down near 25.50.
