WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - U.S. retail sales showed surprising strength in October, rising 0.2 percent despite a large decline in auto sales, Commerce Department figures show Friday.
Auto sales declined 2.2 percent in October after a 4.3 percent increase in September. Excluding autos, retail sales rose 0.9 percent, the strongest sales since May. Read the full release.
The figures were slightly better than expected. Wall Street economists surveyed by CBS MarketWatch were estimating a 0.1 percent gain in total sales and 0.6 percent for ex-autos sales in October. See Economic Calendar.
Treasurys pared earlier gains on the report. The dollar was little moved. Stock futures jumped higher on the news. See Market Snapshot.
Gasoline station sales rose 4.3 percent in October, contributing about half the increase in ex-auto sales. Excluding both food and gas, core retail sales rose 0.5 percent.
The figures are not adjusted for price changes.
September's sales growth was revised higher to a 1.6 percent gain from the earlier estimate of 1.5 percent, while ex-auto sales were revised up to 0.8 percent from 0.6 percent.
Retail sales are up 7.6 percent in the past 12 months, while ex-autos sales are up 8.5 percent.
Sales at most kinds of stores were higher in October.
One surprise: Sales at building materials stores fell 1.1 percent, contrary to expectations of a large increase due to the storms that battered Florida and other Southeast states in September.
Sales at general merchandise stores climbed 0.9 percent after a 1.3 percent gain in September.
Sales at clothing retailers increased 3 percent. Health-care and personal care store sales rose 0.5 percent. Sales at leisure-time stores were flat.
Food store sales increased 0.4 percent, while restaurant and bar sales climbed 1 percent.
Sales at furniture stores rose 0.3 percent, while sales at electronics and appliance stores fell 0.1 percent.
Sales at nonstore retailers such as catalog and online increased 0.8 percent.
