Nokia Scores Big Win With China Mobile Partnership For Lumia 920T

With the iPhone 5 slated to launch in China next week, Nokia (NYSE:NOK) seems to have scored a major coup by roping in China Mobile (NYSE:CHL) for its flagship Lumia smartphone. There have been rumors in the market about the Lumia 920T for several weeks now but Nokia finally confirmed Wednesday that it will indeed be bringing the TD-SCDMA variant of its flagship Lumia 920 smartphone to China Mobile before the end of the year. While Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5 will be launched on both China Unicom (NYSE:CHU) and China Telecom (NYSE:CHA), China Mobile’s huge subscriber base gives Nokia almost twice as big an addressable market for its comeback Windows Phone bid in the world’s biggest smartphone market.

This comes on the back of several reports claiming that the Lumia Windows Phone 8 smartphones are seeing impressive demand leading to sell-outs in multiple developed markets, including the U.S., Germany and Australia. A Yahoo China report goes as far as to claim that Nokia received more than 2.5 million orders for the Lumia 920 in less than a month since launch. To add perspective, this is just a tad shy of 2.9 million sales that Nokia recorded for the entire Lumia portfolio during the previous quarter. With the world’s largest subscriber base of close to 700 million and 3G penetration of only about 11%, China Mobile presents a big opportunity for Nokia to make the most of the rising Lumia popularity.

However, Nokia faces an uphill task against the two well-entrenched ecosystems of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) to create a niche for itself and Microsoft. Even with China Mobile’s help, it is possible that Apple’s iPhone 5 launch might dampen Chinese enthusiasm for the Lumia. Nonetheless, more carrier partnerships and better app support to drive Lumia sales will be key to Nokia’s resurgent hopes. We have a $4.50 price estimate for Nokia, about 40% ahead of the current market price.

Nokia has carrier backing

The need for more competition in the smartphone market, not only in terms of hardware but also software, is being increasingly felt by both customers and carriers alike. A competitive third mobile ecosystem will increase the number of choices for customers and foster innovation in the industry. More competition will also put less burden on the carriers who are increasingly feeling the pinch of smartphone subsidies on their margins. It is no wonder therefore that wireless carriers in both the U.S. and China have jumped on Nokia’s latest offerings to counter the growing dominance of Android and iOS in both these markets.

In the U.S., T-Mobile and AT&T were the early Lumia backers with AT&T affording the phone a “hero” status at its stores and making it the exclusive free phone for all AT&T employees to generate awareness. The marketing push ensured that the Lumia 900 was among the top three best-selling handsets at AT&T until July, a period of four months since launch. With Lumia WP8, Nokia has signed on Verizon as well to gain more visibility and bolster its chances of penetrating the U.S.

As for China, its smartphone market is expected to be the largest in the world by the end of the year. With 3G penetration at less than 20%, the growth potential is huge. Even the carriers here are actively trying to transition their huge 2G base to 3G. China Telecom has already jumped on Nokia’s 800C offering. China Mobile is in need of a flagship smartphone that it can actively market in order to promote its 3G network, an area where it has lagged its competitors. (see China Mobile Needs To Step Up As 3G Growth Slows) It is pursuing an Apple iPhone deal, but government concerns over the high subsidies associated with the iPhone is a big deterrent. However, it may not be long before the iPhone arrives on China Mobile, so Nokia will be looking to the make the most of the opportunity while the sun shines.

Still, while selling the iPhone is more lucrative considering its incredible popularity among buyers, emerging market carriers are wary of margin pressures that selling such an expensive phone entails. Nokia can alleviate these concerns by offering more handset choices at lower prices, or packing in more features at the same price. While the iPhone retails at an unsubsidized $775 in China, Nokia has cheaper Lumia offerings such as the Lumia 800C which is priced at a competitive $570, more than $200 cheaper. Nokia also announced the cheaper Lumia 610 on China Telecom and will be looking to add other carriers soon.

WP8 has essential ingredients for success

Overall, the Lumia has seen decent traction build up with carrier support in the U.S. and China helping Nokia sell about 11 million units in all, with sales doubling in the first three quarters since launch late last year. However, where carrier partnerships have not been hard to come by, getting people to warm up to the Windows ecosystem has proved increasingly tough considering how well-entrenched Android and iOS have become as mobile ecosystems. The iTunes store and Google Play boast close to 700k apps respectively while there are only about 120K available in the Windows Phone Marketplace.

This is where WP8 offers both Nokia and Microsoft their best chance to find a place in the growing mobile market. While building Windows 8 and WP8, Microsoft ensured that both shared the same kernel and therefore inherited the same rich feature set that has made Windows a household name in the PC industry. This has helped integrate the two platforms closely, thereby making apps developed for either platform easier to port. Having a huge user base for its Windows PC platform will therefore help Microsoft generate significant support for the new integrated Windows8/WP8 user experience, from both developers and users alike, thereby driving the sales of Windows Phones in general and the Lumia in particular.

Nokia's New Smartphones Get Poor Reception

Shares of Finnish Handset Maker Drop 13% After Company Unveils Two Flagship Devices in Make-or-Break Move

Nokia Corp.'s shares plummeted 16% Wednesday after the company unveiled two new smartphones designed to run on Microsoft Corp.'s latest operating system, in a make-or-break move for the struggling Finnish handset maker.

The declines started during Chief Executive Stephen Elop's morning presentation of the new Lumia 920 and 820 phones at a media event in New York. Both devices use the Windows Phone 8 operating system, work on high-speed fourth-generation networks and feature Nokia's advanced mapping and location services.

The launch of Nokia's Windows 8 smartphone is just one step in the company's ongoing turnaround effort, CEO Stephen Elop says in an interview with the Journal's John Stoll.

Michael Walkley, an analyst at Canaccord Genuity, attributed the drop to worries about the launch of the new devices, which will likely go up against a new iPhone from Apple Inc. as well as new devices powered by Google Inc.'s Android operating system.

Nokia didn't disclose when the new phones would hit store shelves—or their price—saying that information would come in the fourth quarter.

"Investors want to be sure the devices will be selling well ahead of Christmas," said Hakan Wranne, an analyst at Swedish banking group Swedbank. "For Nokia, it's all about distribution now, and we got no answers on when these new devices will sell and which US operators will market them," he said.

Mr. Elop said Nokia has worked hard to distinguish the devices. The Lumia 920 will have an eight-megapixel camera similar to the iPhone 4S, but it will have a Carl Zeiss lens. Nokia, which has long touted the high-end lenses in its devices, is once again banking on the popularity of its camera to extend the market for its smartphones.

The new phones have brighter, more colorful screen presentations. The company's Smart Shoot feature allows users to remove unwanted photo content, and its image-stabilization produces sharper, more colorful images and video in low light.

Nokia is hoping the smartphones will catch on with consumers and help turn around the company. Once the market leader in mobile phones, Nokia has lost ground to Apple's iPhone and devices powered by Android on the high end, and phones produced by emerging-market competitors on the low end.

A year and a half ago, Mr. Elop made the risky decision to jettison the company's own operating system and focus on phones built around Microsoft's software. While well reviewed by critics, the phones that were released since have failed to get much traction with consumers. The new line is Nokia's second generation of Microsoft phones.

"While the new phones unveiled Wednesday are seen as more critical to Nokia's prospects, the announcement also is important to Microsoft and its push into the smartphone business," said Steve Ballmer, chief executive of Microsoft, who briefly joined Mr. Elop on stage Wednesday.

"Microsoft and Nokia forged their phone partnership 18 months ago and the new Windows Phone 8 devices bring that partnership to life."

Developers have written more than 100,000 applications for Windows Phones, up from 7,000 when the partnership began. That increase in numbers combined with the cross-platform features of Windows 8 makes it likely that "the next app developer to hit it really, really big will be a developer on Windows," Mr. Ballmer said.

The operating system, meanwhile, has been completely overhauled by Microsoft and will be compatible with Microsoft's Windows 8 for personal and tablet computers. The new software is set to make its debut Oct. 26.

Despite the high-powered union between Nokia and Microsoft, devices running Windows Phone software have a smaller mobile market share than the operating system held before the partnership began. This has prompted Nokia to embark on a sweeping restructuring that will cut 10,000 jobs, close factories and see several executives replaced.

Despite receiving favorable reviews, Nokia's first Windows-powered Lumia smartphones haven't sold in great numbers. Statistics released from industry research firm Gartner Inc. showed that the Windows Phone operating system ran on less than 3% of smartphones sold in the second quarter.

However, in the wake of Apple's big patent-suit win over Samsung Electronics Co. last month, analysts expect Samsung and other phone makers to invest more heavily in Windows devices in order to hedge their bets against legal attacks from Apple. Those phone makers have been focused on devices powered by Google's Android software, Apple's target in a global wave of litigation.

Nokia's announcement comes a week after Samsung beat the company to the punch and unveiled its own new Windows phone. Microsoft has said manufacturers including smartphone maker HTC Corp. of Taiwan and telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies Co. of China will also be making Windows Phone 8 devices.

Nokia also has to contend with Apple, which has invited the media to a product announcement Sept. 12 at which it is widely expected to announce a new iPhone.

Separately Wednesday, Motorola Mobility took the wraps off three new smartphones for its RAZR line at a New York City event. The company, now owned by Google, said the RAZR M model, which has a 4.3-inch touchscreen, will go on sale next week. No specific launch date or pricing were announced for the other two models, the RAZR HD and RAZR HD Maxx, with Motorola only saying that the devices would launch "before the holidays."

Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi said Nokia's highly anticipated launch has come at a good time, given that many BlackBerry users and some users of Google's Android operating system are looking for an alternative. She added, however, that Nokia will need to work hard to articulate the benefits of the devices to consumers, and that this will require investment in close work with retailers and distributors.

The launch is also considered to be Mr. Elop's last chance to win over the company's long-suffering investors. Shareholders, particularly on Nokia's home turf, are growing restless with the slow-moving turnaround and will be closely watching to see if the new phones catch on in the marketplace.

"Most of our 10,000 members own Nokia shares, and there is a lot of disappointment with the company and its management," said Timo Rothovius, chairman of Finland's Shareholders Association for small investors. "People are especially disappointed with Stephen Elop."

If the new phones don't sell, Mr. Rothovius said, his group will push for Mr. Elop's removal.

Since Mr. Elop made the risky decision in February last year to scrap Nokia's own software, Symbian, and use Microsoft's Windows operating system for its future devices, the company has piled up billions of euros in losses, its credit rating has been slashed to junk status by all three major ratings companies, and Nokia has lost its crown as the world's largest maker of mobile phones to Samsung.

Nokia a subir 11% hoje

Nokia jumps on hopes it can cash in on Samsung setback
Published: Monday, 27 Aug 2012 | 5:27 AM ET Text Size

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Shares in mobile phone firm Nokia leapt 10 percent on Monday on hopes it can benefit from a setback to rival Samsung, which has lost a high-profile court case to Apple that could lead to an injunction against some of its products.

A U.S. jury found South Korea's Samsung Electronics copied critical features of Apple's hugely popular iPhone and iPad and awarded the U.S. company $1.05 billion in damages.

"In addition to Apple, we name Microsoft and Nokia as the main beneficiaries from this outcome," said Nordea analyst Sami Sarkamies.

Shares in Nokia were 10.2 percent higher at 2.746 euros by 0835 GMT. Microsoft's European-listed shares were 1.6 percent higher.

Nokia and its software partner Microsoft have been struggling to win ground from Samsung's Android-powered smartphones which lead the market.

Google's Android is used in around 65 percent of smartphones sold globally, with Samsung the biggest maker of Android phones.

Nokia has been fighting for survival after losing vast ground to Apple and Samsung. In 2011 it forged a software alliance with Microsoft, which had also fallen behind in smartphone software.

Nokia is now the largest maker of Windows Phones, but the market share of the software has stayed at below 5 percent.

"We think that the real winner hear will be Microsoft and the Windows Phone ecosystem," Nomura analysts said in a note.

"As Android and Apple tear each other apart, Microsoft has been waiting in the wings and is in a very good position to move in and entice users to switch from Android to Microsoft, as we have already seen that user loyalty is low," they said.

Nokia is expected to launch its first smartphones using a new version of Windows Phone software at an industry event in early September.

Nokia off after 10K job cuts, executive changes

By Robert Daniel

TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Nokia Corp., NOK -2.79% FI:NOK1V -5.94% the Finnish mobile phone maker, were down 5.7% after the company said on Thursday that it would cut 10,000 jobs and shuffle its top management. "These planned reductions are a difficult consequence of the intended actions we believe we must take to ensure Nokia's long-term competitive strength," President and Chief Executive Stephen Elop said in a statement. The company said it would significantly reduce operating expenses at its Device and Services division to return to sustainable adjusted operating profitability there as quickly as possible. Nokia also said that three executives from its leadership team would step down as of June 30: Jerri DeVard, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, Mary McDowell, executive vice president of mobile phones, and Niklas Savander, executive vice president of markets.

Esta só mesmo nos States -- a Nokia foi posta em tribunal porque as vendas do Lumia Windows Phone foram abaixo do prometido.

Também, por lá há tantos advogados e a concorrência é tão forte que têm que fazer pela vida.

Nokia hit with lawsuit over poor Lumia Windows Phone sales

AN ANGRY SHAREHOLDER has filed a class action lawsuit against Nokia, claiming the company misled investors with the promise of Windows Phone success.

The investor, Robert Chmielinski filed the lawsuit against Nokia in New York, saying that the Finnish phone firm falsely talked up Lumia's chances of turning the company's fortunes around.

"The complaint alleges that during the Class Period, defendants told investors that Nokia's conversion to a Windows platform would halt its deteriorating position in the smartphone market. It did not," said lawyers representing Chmielinski.

"This became apparent on April 11, 2012, when Nokia disclosed that its first quarter performance would be worse than expected. Nokia expected its first quarter 2012 non-IFRS Devices & Services operating margin to fall by 3 [per cent], and projected first quarter 2012 Devices & Services net sales of €4.2 billion."

The lawyers also made reference to the well-publicised Nokia Lumia 900 "glitch", which resulted in the Finnish company offering customers an automatic $100 rebate in the US, making the phone "essentially free".

Earlier this week, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop admitted that the company was struggling. He said, "It's hard to break through. It's been harder than we expected."
