"Look out! When you are an $8 billion company with $10 billion in sales and you're putting out press releases about $3 million contract wins, you know something's wrong.
That's Nortel.
I continue to think that Nortel, even at $2, is no bargain. Everyone wants to speculate that a $2 stock could go to $3 or $4. I am all for speculation. But the situation with Nortel continues to deteriorate.
Now, I know there has been a spate of upgrades of both the debt and the stock, but I continue to believe that this company has lost its way. At best it will be like Lucent (LU:NYSE - commentary - research - Cramer's Take), where it merges and then goes down.
I think that's optimistic, though.
It is telling that this stock rallied initially on the Siemens (SI:NYSE - commentary - research - Cramer's Take)-Nokia (NOK:NYSE ADR - commentary - research - Cramer's Take) tie-up and then proceeded to its low of the year. That was right. These two companies together can really come after Nortel.
Don't you go after Nortel. That's just plain a mistake, especially when it's making hay over a $3 million contract. "
