Emcore (Charts) is "a fascinating little company [with] a really interesting collection of possibilities" including its PhotoVoltaics division - which makes solar cells and panels, says Landis. Emcore's focus currently is satellite applications, where the systems produce energy very efficiently, but are also very expensive and are currently only used commercially. Landis sees potential for Emcore in selling smaller land-based systems that are less efficient, but more affordable and thus can be sold to a much wider market.

Emcore is also working in partnership with GE Lighting to develop and market LED technology - which is more reliable, longer-lasting and more energy-efficient than traditional light bulbs.

The company isn't expected to make a profit until next year, but Emcore stock is up 30% since August 2005. The company's dual-direction strategy of providing energy saving and alternative energy products is a promising one, Landis says.

"Every time the price of oil goes up, green investments and alternative energy investments shoot through the roof," says Landis, adding that a company like Emcore has "both ends of that - exposure to LEDs so that people use less power, and exposure to solar, so that people have more power to begin with."

LED Lighting Fixtures, Inc. Sets World Record at 80 Lumens per Watt for Warm White Fixture
Tuesday May 30, 8:00 am ET

Company to Demonstrate Initial Products to Target Customers During Lighting Conference

LAS VEGAS, May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- LED Lighting Fixtures Inc. (LLF) today announced another record in solid state fixture performance at 80 lumens per watt from its most recent recessed downlight. This product was tested by an independent lab as providing 600 lumens of warm white light at a color temperature of 3100 Kelvin, with a color rendering index (CRI) of 92. Total power supplied to the fixture from a residential voltage AC power source was 7.5 watts. The company used LEDs supplied by Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE - News). These results reflect a ten percent increase in efficiency from the company's previous record of 73 lumens per watt announced on April 24, 2006.

Neal Hunter, LLF's CEO, stated, "The Company has set the world's benchmark for downlight products using light emitting diode (LED) technology. LLF is the first company to demonstrate a viable LED based downlight product that will appeal to high volume markets based on price and quality."

LLF also announced that it is meeting with several key target customers and supply chain partners during the 2006 Lightfair International Conference in Las Vegas this week and is providing them with exclusive demonstrations of its products.

LLF expects to manufacture its initial light fixtures by the end of the year and intends to offer LED-based recessed downlight products at a substantially lower price and significantly higher brightness and quality than other LED products currently available in the market.

LLF's President, Mike Rogers, said, "When comparing the total cost of ownership over the lifetime of this type of LLF fixture, a 65 watt incandescent bulb solution costs more than five times compared to LLF's LED- based products, while compact fluorescent (CFL) alternatives cost nearly two times more without factoring the on-going maintenance expenses. LED-based solutions are expected to last for more than 50,000 hours or approximately 23 years without replacement when operating an average of six hours a day, this compares to a one year life for incandescent bulbs and four years for CFL products."

The company used CSA International's Atlanta Lighting Laboratory to conduct the product measurement. CSA International is accredited by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL).

...the common light bulb is ripe for replacement. And now -- thanks to cost-reducing technology for the next generation of “light bulbs” -- a huge mega-shift is truly under way.

‘Round about 2008 or 2009, I expect this “new light bulb” to grace the cover of Time magazine as product of the year. But at that point, the investing wealth will already have been made.

The time to take advantage of this opportunity is now.

So exactly what am I talking about? Light-emitting diodes, or LEDs.

Think of an LED as an incandescent bulb, but without a filament.

Because LEDs use low voltage, they can be used in many applications that need a low-power, low-light source. The cell phone handset is a natural, and they are already used in everything from digital clocks to car dashboards.

The potential for white LEDs is enormous, with applications that include:

*** Backlighting for large-screen LCD-TVs using high-brightness white LEDs as the backlight.

*** Large-screen TVs using high-brightness LEDs of all colors, including white, red, green and blue.

*** Public signaling and signs, including traffic lights, railroad crossings, roadway intersections, advertising signs for businesses, etc.

Why are people already making the switch to LEDs?

Because they have much lower power requirements with greater efficiency, primarily meaning less heat. Because less power is used, and used more efficiently, LEDs have a longer lifespan and thus provide much lower maintenance costs.

They’re simply CHEAPER all around.

But the real breakthrough comes as LEDs replace regular light bulbs in home and business applications.

And today, that shift is already under way. But not for all applications just yet. At this point, LEDs don’t provide the brightness needed for all lighting.

But new standards are achieved on a regular basis, bringing that day closer and closer. It’s inevitable. The endgame is just around the corner.

In fact, a recent survey of decision-makers in the building field showed that two-thirds believe LEDs will replace fluorescent lighting in the commercial world within the next five years!
