After another downbeat day on Wall Street, each of the ten economic sectors closed in the red and the major indices extended their losses. During after hours trading, the tone is still bearish but rather lackluster; the S&P 500 futures, at 1181, are a point below fair value, while the Nasdaq 100 futures, at 1549, are two points below fair value.
In the interim, the chart below highlights some of the more notable news items/movers in extended action.

The Dow component issued downside guidance for Q2, foreseeing EPS of $0.32-0.33 vs. the $0.35 consensus, on revs of $11.9-12.0 bln vs. the 12.26 bln consensus. For FY06, Microsoft forecasts EPS of 1.28-1.32 vs. the $1.31 consensus, on revs of 43.7-44.5 vs. the 4.43 bln consensus.

KLA-Tenecor (KLAC) 44.00 -3.24 (-6.86)
KLA-Tenecor reported fiscal Q1 (Sept.) earnings of $0.50 per share, excluding non-recurring items, $0.02 better than the Reuters Estimates consensus. Revenues declined 6.7% year/year, to $483.9 mln vs. the $476.8 mln consensus.

Psychiatric Solutions (PSYS) 49.80 -2.23 (-4.29%) Delivering Q3 EPS of $0.44, excluding non-recurring items, Psychiatric Solutions exceeded the Reuters Estimates consensus by $0.02. Sales jumped 71.7% year/year, to $223.6 mln vs. the $224.3 mln consensus. For FY05, PSYS estimates EPS of $1.63-1.65 vs. the $1.62 consensus. For FY06, the co. foresees EPS of $2.10-2.15 vs. the $2.16 consensus estimate.

SafeNet Inc. (SFNT) 31.25 -2.80 (-8.22%)
SafeNet, with Q3 (Sep) earnings of $0.25 per share, excluding non-recurring items, came in $0.13 below the Reuters Estimates consensus. The co.'s revenues rose 6.6% year/year, to $63.4 mln vs. the $65.7 mln consensus. For Q4, SFNT expects EPS of $0.55-0.60 vs. the $0.55 consensus, on sales of $72-82 mln vs. the $79.21 mln consensus. For FY05, SFNT predicts EPS of $1.45-1.55 vs. the $1.58 consensus, on revs of $255-275 mln vs. the $267.66 mln consensus. For FY06, SafeNet anticipates EPS of $1.70-1.90 vs. the $1.87 consensus, on FY06 sales of $295-315 mln vs. the $311.42 mln consensus.

Micro Strategy Inc. (MSTR) 68.27 -6.31 (-8.46%) Micro Strategy, posting Q3 EPS of $0.91, missed the Reuters Estimates consensus by $0.13. The co.'s revenues rose 8.6% year/year, to $65.8 mln vs. the $66.2 mln consensus.

Invitrogen Corp. (IVGN) 63.24 -7.54 (-10.65%) Announcing Q3 EPS of $0.80, excluding non-recurring items, Invitrogen fell $0.08 short of the Reuters Estimates consensus. Sales rose 13.0% year/year, to $289.6 mln vs. the $308.1 mln consensus. For FY05, IVGN estimates EPS of $3.42-3.45 vs. the $3.52 consensus, on revs of $1.19-1.195 bln vs. the $1.2 bln consensus.

Friday's round of third quarter earnings reports will be significantly lighter than the last few sessions', but will still offer over two dozen companies' results prior to the open. Amongst the more notable are Chevron (CVX), Archer-Daniels (ADM), Corinthian Colleges (COCO), and Overstock.com (OSTK). The earnings front, meanwhile, features three items. At the open, Q3 GDP and Q3 Employment Cost Index will be released, followed by the University of Michigan's revision to its October sentiment report at 9:45 ET. Of the data, GDP will likely attract the most attention; economists expect 3.6% for the total read and 2.8% for the chain deflator. Briefing.com
