Microsoft Under Fire

BURLINGAME - In a case of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend," Sun Microsystems and Google today teamed up to take a swipe at Microsoft's desktop dominance.

The deal could be a boon for Sun, which has tried with minimal success to use its open source desktop suite, StarOffice, to put a dent in Microsoft's (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) Office monopoly. With Google's (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) backing and a new market approach, the latest deal is a positive for Sun, but the extent of any long term benefit is unclear.

"There should be a lot of money flowing both ways if we do this right," says Sun's ever-optimistic Chief Executive Scott McNealy. He wouldn't be more specific than that, and neither would his former protégé at Sun and current counterpart at Google, Eric Schmidt.

Schmidt said Google expects to drive more ad revenue from an increase in the use of its search toolbar. McNealy pointed out that Google is a Sun customer and will continue buying Sun's products.

More importantly for Sun, the deal calls for Google to distribute Sun's desktop software package, known as the Java Runtime Environment, and an open source desktop productivity suite, called OpenOffice.org, which Sun founded in 1999 as an offshoot of StarOffice. Sun will include Google's toolbar search as an option in its JRE.

All of the products involved in the announcement represent a threat to Microsoft's Office products. Google and Sun have separately and repeatedly said that Microsoft's time is past, while the Internet will now be used as the dominant conduit for software and technology applications. That transition shifts the center of gravity away from the desktop PC--Microsoft's bread and butter--and onto the Internet, where it is playing catch up to a number of rivals.

It is a vision Sun has been espousing for years, and it's one that the company paid dearly for as the dot-com implosion reverberated. Sun has made a comeback of sorts this year, making a couple of large acquisitions and vocally touting its resurgent positioning.

Microsoft, meanwhile, has run into difficulties, as Google has taken its status away as the premier standard bearer in the tech industry. Google still bills itself as a lowly search engine, even as it assembles an impressive array of new technologies to rival Microsoft, including e-mail and desktop search.

McNealy and Schmidt stayed well away from directly provoking Microsoft's fury, parrying direct questions about the software behemoth during Tuesday's press conference. McNealy said, however, that consumers need more choice when it comes to deciding what technology they use.

For Sun, the deal is significant to the extent that it is focused on consumers rather than on business users. Sun has typically been known as an enterprise-computing company, focusing its development and products on expensive, powerful servers and its own operating system for data-intensive number crunching.

Still, just as Microsoft's Office program is used in the workplace, it can also be used in the home. The same is true of Sun's StarOffice software, which consists of word processing, spreadsheet, graphic design, presentation, mail reader, calendar and other features.

This is where Google's and Sun's mutual animosity for Microsoft intersect.

"Microsoft is already talking about its Office version 12 coming out next year," said Charles King, principal with Pund-IT Research. "From a marketing-buzz standpoint, this Google-Sun announcement will wash the idea of Office 12 out of most people's minds."

It still remains to be seen how much of a financial benefit the deal will provide to either company. Sun shares began climbing Monday on news of a pending announcement with Google, but most of the gains faded by Tuesday's closing bell, showing that early excitement for the deal had fizzled.

Google has had no trouble keeping excitement going on its end since before it became a public company, but Sun needs to make sure it continues to capitalize on this opportunity if it is to truly the reap rewards

Comprei SNDK ontem.. aproveitei a subida realmente..
