ECONOMIC REPORT: U.S. factory orders rise 1.0% in June; Excluding transportation, monthly orders up 1.3%

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Orders for U.S.-made factory goods increased 1.0% in June, the Commerce Department estimated Tuesday.

Economists had been looking for a gain of about 1.1% in factory orders, according to a survey conducted by MarketWatch. See Economic Calendar.

Factory orders had increased 3.6% in May after rising by 0.7% in March and April. They experienced a decline in February and were flat in January.

Excluding transportation equipment, June's orders climbed 1.3%. Excluding defense, orders rose 0.5%, the Commerce Department's data showed.

Meanwhile, shipments of factory goods slipped 0.1% in June, following a 0.3% rise in May and a 0.7% gain in April. Inventories decreased $0.1 billion to $483.4 billion, while unfilled orders rose 2.8% to $581 billion.

Orders for durable goods, such as airplanes, computers, and washing machines, increased 2.0% in June.

Orders for machinery rose 4.0%, while electronics excluding semiconductors surged 10.8%.

On the shipments side, durable goods were flat in June.

Meanwhile, orders of nondurable goods decreased 0.2% for the month.
