Greenspan sees little impact on rates from China

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. interest rates likely won't change much from the decision by China to revalue its currency and adopt a managed floating exchange rate with a basket of currencies, Fed chair Alan Greenspan said Thursday. China and other Asian central banks have been buying U.S. Treasurys to maintain their currencies. Greenspan said Fed studies indicate that buying by Chinese and other central banks has cut long-term U.S. interest rates by no more than a half percentage point. "That's the magnitude we are talking about," he said. Markets could have already anticipated any change in buying patterns, he said.
