ECONOMIC REPORT: U.S. jobless claims rise to 327,000; Claims at highest level since early Jan.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) First time claims for U.S. unemployment insurance rose in the latest week, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 17,000 to 327,000 in the week ended March 5.

This is the largest level of claims since the week ended Jan. 8.

The rise was unexpected. Economists had an average forecast in a MarketWatch survey of 309,000 for first-time claims.

A Labor Department official said some of the increase was due to the President's Day holiday on Feb. 21. There was a surge in claims this week, after the holiday-shortened previous week.

Unemployment benefits are available for about six months to those in covered employment who lose their jobs through no fault of their own. More than a third of beneficiaries exhaust their benefits before finding work.

The four-week moving average, which smoothes out seasonal distortions, rose 5,750 to 312,500.

The number of former workers receiving state unemployment checks rose by 39,000 to 2.70 million in the week ending Feb. 26. The four-week average of continuing claims dipped 7,000 to 2.68 million. This is the lowest level since the week ended April 21, 2001.

The insured unemployment rate remained at 2.1 percent.
