U.S. Jan. factory orders up 0.2% vs. 0.0% expected
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Orders to U.S. factories increased 0.2 percent in January, the Commerce Department estimated Friday.
Higher demand for electrical equipment, chemicals, paper and petroleum were largely offset by declines in airplanes, computers, and machinery.
Factory shipments rose 1.4 percent, while inventories increased a record 1.3 percent.
Economists were expecting factory orders to be flat in January.
Orders for core capital goods increased 2.9 percent.
Orders for durable goods were revised down to a 1.3 percent decline from 0.9 percent.
Orders for nondurable goods increased 1.8 percent.
