WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Orders for new U.S.-made factory goods grew 0.3 percent in December, the third increase in a row but the weakest since September, the Commerce Department estimated Thursday.
Economists were looking for a gain of 0.6 percent in factory orders, according to the survey conducted by MarketWatch.
Shipments of factory goods increased 0.9 percent in December, while inventories fell 0.1 percent, the first decline in a year. The inventory-to-shipments ratio fell to 1.23 from 1.24 in December.
For all of 2004, factory orders increased 11.1 percent, the biggest increase since comparable data began in 1992. Shipments grew 10.8 percent in 2004, also a record. The figures are not adjusted for price changes.
In December, orders for durable goods increased 1.1 percent, nearly double the 0.6 percent increase estimated last week. Orders for computers and electronics (excluding semiconductors) increased 6.8 percent. Orders for machinery increased 3.6 percent. Orders for aircraft fell 16.8 percent.
Excluding transportation goods, orders increased 0.7 percent.
Orders for core capital goods increased 2.1 percent in December and 11.8 percent in 2004.
Orders for nondurable goods dropped 0.6 percent, with the decrease more than accounted for by a 5.2 percent drop in petroleum refinery orders. Orders for pharmaceuticals fell 4.9 percent, offsetting increases in grains, tobacco, apparel and plastics.
Unfilled factory orders increased 0.6 percent.
