Intel Fourth-Quarter Profit Falls 2 Percent, but Sales Set Record on Demand for Computer Chips

By Matthew Fordahl, AP Technology Writer

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Intel Corp.'s fourth-quarter profits fell 2 percent but it reported record sales as the company benefited from strong holiday demand for computer chips and it reduced an inventory buildup from earlier in 2004.

Intel, the world's largest chip maker, said Tuesday it saw strength in computer microprocessors, motherboards and chipsets as well as flash memory, used primarily in cell phones. It reduced inventory by $559 million during the period.

The company also said it expects sales to be in the range of $8.8 billion and $9.4 billion, the midpoint of which is slightly rosier than the average Wall Street estimate of $8.9 billion. Still, it fits within seasonal patterns, said chief financial officer Andy Bryant.

"I don't think it's particularly optimistic," he said in an interview. "It's looking at history. It's listening to customers. It's kind of a seasonal first quarter."

Still, the forecast sent Intel shares 66 cents higher, or nearly 3 percent, in extended-session trading. Earlier, they closed at $22.54, down 34 cents, on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

"With the big inventory decline, they're off to a running start in Q1 and Q2, which are quite seasonally sluggish quarters for them," said Rick Whittington, an analyst at Caris & Co.

For the three months ended Dec. 25, Intel earned $2.12 billion, or 33 cents per share, on sales of $9.6 billion. In the same period in 2003, Intel earned $2.17 billion, or 33 cents per share, on sales of $8.7 billion.

In December, Intel estimated its fourth-quarter sales would be between $9.3 billion and $9.5 billion. In October, its forecast was for between $8.6 billion and $9.2 billion in revenue.

Analysts were expecting the company to earn 31 cents per share on sales of $9.4 billion, according to a survey by Thomson First Call.

For the year, Intel earned $7.5 billion, or $1.16 per share, on sales of $34.21 billion. That compares with earnings of $5.64 billion, or 85 cents per share, on sales of $30.14 billion in the same period last year.

"We ended 2004 with record revenues and robust demand for Intel architecture products across all geographies and channels," said Craig Barrett, Intel's chief executive. "Our investments in manufacturing capacity, innovative new products and global presence have allowed us to post double-digit gains in both revenue and profits two years in a row."

Like other chip makers, Intel saw a large inventory buildup in the middle of 2004. Previously, the company estimated it would work through a "few hundred million dollars" during the fourth quarter.

"We said in the third quarter we were going to slow down wafer starts," Bryant said. "If you put less in the front of the factory and you sell more, your inventory drops pretty dramatically. ... We actually did a little better than we expected."

Bryant attributed the 2 percent drop in net earnings to a tax benefit in the fourth-quarter of 2003 -- as well as to a lower gross margin percentage in 2004. The reduction of inventory should eventually help the company boost its gross margin, analysts said.

"As gross margins for Intel start to go up, that's usually a sign of the stock bottoming," said Apjit Walia, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets.

The solid profitability comes at the end of a year that was marked by several missteps by Intel, including the postponement and cancellation of high-profile projects.

Intel also was put in the unusual position of following the technological lead of Advanced Micro Devices Inc., which in 2003 introduced a backward-compatible processor that can handle vastly larger amounts of memory than today's chips. Intel only launched a similar chip in 2004.

But AMD appears to be struggling. Late Monday, the company warned that its profits would be much lower than expected because of weakness in flash memory business.

"Investors will breathe a deep sigh of relief after the AMD debacle," Whittington said. "(Intel) went a long way toward burying some of the problems they had back in the second and third quarter of last year."

On Tuesday, Intel said it shipped a record number of flash memory chips, though revenues were flat.

"We shipped more units, but our prices were a little bit lower and our revenues were about the same," Bryant said. "It's a competitive marketplace."

Boa noite, transcrevo estes dois paragrafos de uma noticia da reuters.
Não me importava que o primeiro esteja certo... :)

"The results topped analysts' average expectation of earnings of 31 cents a share and sales of $9.42 billion. "It's a terrific report. Intel is clearly the bellwether, and this report could easily turn the tech sector," said Stephen Leeb, president of Leeb Capital Management in New York."

"The Santa Clara, California-based company targeted sales of $8.8 billion to $9.4 billion in the current period, at the higher end of the average analyst estimate of $8.94 billion, as measured by Reuters Estimates"

Acabaram de sair os resultados e num olhar relâmpago, parecem-me acima das expectativas. A acção está a ganhar cerca de 3% no after hours.

Um abraço,
Ulisses
