)

AUSTIN, Texas -- RealNetworks Inc. (RNWK) shares climbed Tuesday as investors speculated that the company could be next in line for a major legal settlement from Microsoft Corp. (MSFT).
Monday, Microsoft agreed to settlements with two of its opponents in the European Union's antitrust case against it. Microsoft now has reached settlements with four of the five major interveners in the EU case, with RealNetworks the only one left.
"We think they're next" for a settlement, Stifel Nicolaus & Co. analyst Kit Spring said.
The previous Microsoft settlements have ranged from about $500 million to $750 million, Mr. Spring said, "and we think there's a good chance that ( RealNetworks) could get a similar settlement."
He has a "market outperform" rating on the company.
A spokesperson for Seattle-based RealNetworks wasn't immediately available for comment.
Pacific Crest Securities analyst Steve Lidberg concurred that the Microsoft settlement speculation seems reasonable, "given the fact that Microsoft has cleared the decks of the vast majority of its outstanding litigation."
Still, Mr. Lidberg pointed out that such a settlement won't change RealNetworks' fundamental prospects. Mr. Lidberg, who has a "sector perform" rating on RealNetworks, said the company faces competitive challenges on several fronts.
Microsoft settled Monday with Novell Inc. (NOVL) and with the Computer & Communications Industry Association, a trade group.
Microsoft agreed to pay Novell $536 million. Financial terms of the trade group settlement weren't disclosed, although The Wall Street Journal reported Microsoft agreed to join the group, pay its legal bills and support its future activities.
Neither Pacific Crest's Mr. Lidberg nor Stifel Nicolaus's Mr. Spring owns a stake in RealNetworks, nor do their firms have investment-banking relationships with the company.
At about 3:15 p.m EST, on the Nasdaq market, shares of RealNetworks were trading up 80 cents, or 15%, at $6.05. Volume was eight million shares traded, compared to a daily average of 854,450.
Earlier Tuesday, the stock traded as high as $6.82, up 30% from Monday's close of $5.25. The stock hit a 52-week high of $7.14 on Jan. 20.

Realnetwork a explodir
