Re: China - o novo ocidente?

Poverty in Britain has deepened, according to a report released on Tuesday, with approximately 6.8 million people now living in "very deep poverty", the highest level in three decades.
"Very deep poverty" refers to households with an after-housing-costs income below 40% of the UK median, amounting to around 16,400 pounds ($22,446.68) a year for a couple with two young children.
China’s population drops for the fourth year in a row, reaching record-low levels
China’s population has fallen for a fourth consecutive year, hitting its lowest birthrate since 1949 despite government efforts to boost fertility.
For the fourth consecutive year, China’s population has declined, dropping to record low levels.
After decades of strict birthrate control, Chinese authorities are experimenting with new measures to encourage larger families, from taxing condoms to offering tax-free kindergarten education.
Yet, new population figures just released by the Chinese government show that the population fell again in 2025, reaching its lowest ever recorded.
China’s population was 1.404 billion last year, around three million less than in 2024.

China’s trade surplus hits $1 trillon in just 11 months despite plunge in shipments to US

Investing.com -- China’s recent export surge is creating ripple effects across global trade, with UBS analysts warning of a potential “second China shock.”
According to UBS, “export volumes [are] up 20%” over the past two years, compared to just 6% growth in the rest of the world, marking China’s strongest trade outperformance since joining the World Trade Organization.
Much of this growth is being directed toward emerging markets (EM), which now account for over half of China’s exports and trade surplus, said the bank.
“That China’s share of final demand is rising in sectors ranging from Latam autos to ASEAN household appliances shows that its export penetration runs far deeper than cyclical ’transshipping’ effects,” UBS wrote.
They add that the quality of Chinese goods is improving, and the country’s export momentum continues even as negative price deflators ease.
“This isn’t just about low prices… quality is playing an increasingly important role,” UBS noted.
While some of China’s export strengths are in building new supply chains, such as Hungarian autos and Indonesian mining, UBS cautioned that the broader trend could weigh on other EM economies.
“China’s rising export competitiveness may compromise growth in the rest of EM,” the analysts warned, citing weak FDI inflows, declining manufacturing/GDP ratios, and deflationary pressures in sectors like chemicals and household products.
UBS sees limited near-term progress in China’s efforts to curb overcapacity. Despite higher U.S. tariffs and attempts to boost domestic consumption, “disinflationary spillovers” are likely to persist. “These disinflationary spillovers will leave EM central banks with more work to do,” UBS added.
The implications for global markets are said to be mixed, with some EM equities potentially benefiting from looser monetary policy, particularly in countries less exposed to Chinese competition.

One of the secrets to China's engineering success is its young people. In 2020, more than 3.5 million of the country's students graduated with degrees in science, technology, engineering and maths, better known as STEM.
That's more than any other country in the world - and Beijing is keen to leverage it. "Building strength in education, science and talent is a shared responsibility," Xi told party leaders last week.
Ever since China opened its economy to the world in the late 1970s, it has "been through a process of accumulating talent and technology," says Abbott Lyu, vice-president of Shanghai-based Whalesbot, a firm that makes AI toys. "In this era of AI, we've got many, many engineers, and they are hardworking."

AI is hungry for data - the more it gets, the smarter it makes itself and, with around a billion mobile phone users compared to just over 400 million in the US, Beijing has a real advantage.

So the engineering challenge is how to make more, for less. "This was our Mission Impossible," Mr Tang said. His company found that the robotic arm used to move chess pieces was hugely expensive to produce and would drive the price up to around $40,000.
So, they tried using AI to help do the work of engineers and enhance the manufacturing process. Mr Tang claims that has driven the cost down to $1,000.
"This is innovation," he says. "Artificial engineering is now integrated into the manufacturing process."
This could have enormous implications as China applies AI on a vast scale. State media already show factories full of humanoid robots. In January, the government said that it would promote the development of AI-powered humanoid robots to help look after its rapidly ageing population.
Xi has repeatedly declared "technological self-reliance" a key goal, which means China wants to create its own advanced chips, to make up for US export restrictions that could hinder its plans.

Officials also announced they would back their ambitious “around 5%” growth target with more robust government spending, raising the budget deficit to around 4% of gross domestic product, the highest level in decades.
