US confirms pause in Israel munitions shipment due to Rafah concerns
The US “paused one shipment of high payload munitions” over concerns regarding Israel's plans for a major ground operation in Rafah, US defence secretary Lloyd Austin has said.
Washington has not yet decided the final fate of the munitions, but is concerned about their possible use in Rafah, he said on Wednesday.
“We're going to continue to do what's necessary to ensure that Israel has the means to defend itself. But that said, we are currently reviewing some near term security assistance shipments in the context of unfolding events in Rafah,” he added.
The US has repeatedly opposed Israel's plans to launch a major ground operation in the border city, where more than 1mn civilians are sheltering.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir rejects Hamas’s ostensible acceptance of a ceasefire as a trick.
“There is only one response to Hamas’s tricks and games — an immediate order to conquer Rafah, increase military pressure, and continue to crush Hamas until it is utterly defeated.”

Israel responded on Monday by saying the proposal fell “far from Israel’s necessary requirements” and vowed to press ahead with its military offensive in Rafah, the southern Gazan city where more than 1mn people have sought sanctuary.
But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the government would dispatch mediators for further talks “to exhaust the possibility of reaching an agreement under conditions acceptable to Israel”.

No agreement over ceasefire proposal
An Israeli official said no ceasefire had been agreed in Gaza, after Hamas said it had accepted a proposal from Egyptian and Qatari mediators over the Israel-Gaza conflict.
The Israeli official said the proposal that Hamas had accepted was a "softened" version of an Egyptian proposal, which included "far-reaching" conclusions that Israel could not accept.
"This would appear to be a ruse intended to make Israel look like the side refusing a deal," said the Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. (...)

Israel retaliates against Turkey for cutting trade ties
The Israeli Foreign Ministry on Friday announced a series of retaliatory steps against Turkey after Ankara suspended trade ties with the Jewish state over the ongoing Gaza war.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said that it would move to reduce Turkish imports to the occupied Palestinian territories, appeal for sanctions against Turkey in international fora for violating existing trade agreements and provide assistance to impacted Israeli export and import sectors.

President Biden was sharply critical Thursday of aspects of protests that have swept across college campuses nationwide in response to the war in Gaza, condemning vandalism and trespassing even as he defended the right to peacefully demonstrate.
“In moments like this, there are always those who rush in to score political points. But this isn’t a moment for politics. It’s a moment for clarity. So let me be clear … Violent protest is not protected. Peaceful protest is,” Biden said in prepared remarks from the White House.
He called out what has occurred at Columbia University and on other college campuses over the past week, which has garnered national attention as tensions have escalated and police disassemble encampments.
“Destroying property is not a peaceful protest, it’s against the law. Vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and graduation. None of this is a peaceful protest, threatening people, intimidating people,” Biden said.
“Dissent is essential to democracy, but dissent must never lead to disorder,” Biden added.
The president said he was not considering sending in the National Guard in response to the protests. And he said the the protests on college campuses have not caused him to rethink his policy in the Middle East.

Israel Katz’s comments come amid simmering tensions between the two countries over the war in Gaza
Israel’s foreign minister has accused Turkey’s leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of “breaking agreements by blocking ports for Israeli imports and exports”, amid simmering tensions between the two countries over the war in Gaza.
“This is how a dictator behaves, disregarding the interests of the Turkish people and businessmen, and ignoring international trade agreements,” Israel Katz wrote on the social media platform X on Thursday.
