"Emerging markets enter a bear market as higher rates and trade fears send investors fleeing"

"• The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF enters a bear market as the Federal Reserve tightens liquidity.
• "As long as global [central banks] insist on reducing liquidity while simultaneously attempting to raise cost of capital, victims would continue to float to the surface," notes a strategist.
• Turkey, China, Argentina and Brazil are among the worst-performing emerging markets as they also trade in a bear market."

"Emerging-market stocks fell into bear-market territory on Thursday amid tighter U.S. monetary policy, worries about global trade and economic meltdowns in Argentina and Turkey."

"The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets exchange-traded fund (EEM) fell 0.3 percent on Thursday, bringing the decline from its all time high reached in January of this year to more than 20 percent. "

"ETFs that track Brazilian, Argentine, Turkish and Chinese stocks are also in bear-market territory. Turkish stocks are down more than 56 percent from their 52-week high, while Brazilian and Argentine stocks are both trading more than 30 percent below that mark. The iShares China Large-Cap ETF (FXI) is down about 24 percent from its one-year high"

"The Federal Reserve continues to raise rates, tightening monetary policy and boosting the U.S. dollar. Several emerging market economies have lots of dollar-denominated debt, so a stronger dollar makes it harder for these countries to repay it. A stronger dollar also makes it harder for emerging markets to buy commodities, most of which are bought and sold in the U.S. currency."

"This remains the key. As long as global [central banks] insist on reducing liquidity while simultaneously attempting to raise cost of capital, victims would continue to float to the surface, starting with weaker players but then gradually spreading to the sturdier corners," said Viktor Shvets, head of Asian equity strategy at Macquarie, in a note."

"Rupiah Plunges To 1998 Asian Financial Crisis Low Amid Emerging Market Liquidation"

"Despite four rate hikes by the Bank of Indonesia since May, the Indonesia’s rupiah slid to a two-decade low, falling to 14,750 per dollar, a level last hit during the Asian Financial Crisis of 1998, and just shy of an all time low, spurring yet another intervention from the central bank as the contagion from the collapse in Argentina and Turkey has turned the market's attention on emerging markets with current account deficits."

"As a reminder, after Argentina and Turkey, Indonesia is next to be hit on this chart from JPM we first showed at the start of June, which plotted countries with a current account deficit and rising external debt."

"Brutal Argentina-Turkey Selloff Engulfs Emerging-Market Peers"

"The massive currency plunge in Argentina and Turkey deepened, spurring a selloff in emerging markets.

The peso tumbled to a record low, prompting Argentine policy makers to raise the nation’s benchmark rate to 60 percent from 45 percent. In Turkey, a report that the central bank’s deputy governor was set to resign sank the lira. South Africa’s rand extended its slide, sending volatility to its highest since December 2016 amid a controversial land reform debate. Brazil’s real pared losses after the monetary authority extended its currency intervention.

Emerging markets got pummeled again amid concern that Argentina and Turkey’s struggles to restore investor confidence will pressure their economies further -- while embroiling the rest of the developing world. That comes at a really bad time when considering the other challenges that investors face -- the end of an era of cheap money, prospects of a global trade war and deep political uncertainties in places such as Brazil.

“These currencies are infecting emerging markets,” said Shamaila Khan, director of emerging-market debt at AllianceBernstein in New York. “There will be volatility around headlines and today is one of the negative days.”

"Brazil Central Bank Intervenes As Real Crashes Near Record Lows"

"The bloodbath in Argentina and Turkey is evident in Brazil also where Bloomberg reports that the central bank just intervened for the first time since June 22."

"BCB reportedly intervened at 4.20 "to provide liquidity" adding that intervention intensity and frequency will depend on the market. The BCB also attempted to provide some confidence by reaffirming that monetary policy is not directly linked to recent market shocks.

For now, the Real has stabilized."

"Rand Tumbles As Government Warns Of "Catastrophe" Unless 'Land Reform' Allowed "

"As Deputy President David Mabuza said, the nation will “slide into catastrophe” if land reform doesn’t take place.

“The majority of our people are poor and homeless,” he told lawmakers in Cape Town Thursday.

“Our resources to carry out reform are limited.”

And the reaction is now getting real as the Rand nears two-week lows once again…"

"Argentine Peso Crashes Back To Record Low - Emergency 1500bp Rate-Hike Fails"

Update 2: Well that's not supposed to happen!! The peso has just collapsed back to its record lows…

Update 1: Having met pre-market, it appears the Argentina Central Bank (CBRA) decided that if things got worse they would 'emergency hike' rates. And as the peso collapsed to 39/USD, they have just raised the key 7-day leliq rate to 60% (a 1500bp hike)! The rate was last hiked from 40% to 45% on Aug 13th. They also confirmed there will no rate cuts until December.
