"Entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley are wealthy, but they also want to change the world to make it better. This may seem absurd in the San Francisco area who is a brutal world, where there is no district. But it is as if they bought their sky. And Jim Pugh, an entrepreneur met in the Mission District - precisely where has installed the first settlement of Spanish Franciscan monks in 1776. Jim and some of his counterparts have launched a universal income experience. They will pay a fixed monthly allowance for a hundred unskilled unemployed in the city of Oakland, just across San Francisco, to see whether the system is viable.

Why do they engage in this matter as they are financiers, businessmen? First, because they really believe in the end of work. If they believe, it is not reassuring. This may be simply because they know what's in their cartons. They know the next technologies that will tumble down and cut jobs. "If we want to maintain a stable society in a world hit by technological breakthroughs, as Jim said, we must organize a safety net." Then there is of course the cynicism there. In fact, they ask the company to organize solidarity they, as owners and entrepreneurs do not want to support. But there is also an element of idealism: they love new ideas. These are the missionaries of modern times.

All entrepreneurs here really have the desire to invent a new capitalism different from that of the US East Coast, one in New York. The finance, to summarize. Claire Take, for example, the French we recently told you about who invented the driverless truck. It is rich in tens of millions, but what motivates her is to invent a business that is not paralyzed by bureaucracy and small heads, where employees are forced to lead a very political way. The small world of start-ups is also a world of idealists with its gurus. As Ray Kurzweil, who announced in 2045 nonbiological intelligence - that is to say the machines - will be a billion times more powerful than that of men.

The small world of start-ups is also a world of idealists, with its gurus and mystics

There are also mystics who organize quasi-religious holidays. Every year during the last week of August, the faithful of this community are found in the Nevada desert, is near here, for Dionysian ceremonies called "Burning Man" (man burning), for a giant mannequin is burnt at the end of the festivities. Not undertake market transactions during the event, which is dedicated to giving and sharing. This year, "Burning Man" attracted nearly 70,000 people.

This is their camp, in short. But there is also something of what the sociologist Max Weber called the "spirit of capitalism". Enrichment can not be a goal in itself, it does not exhaust the need for transcendence men. Is it not precisely here, in the US, we wrote about the banknotes "In God we trust", "It's in God we trust"?
