Live Wire: Iraqi dinar scam is still out there
Catherine Pritchard
Q: Is it true that you should buy Iraqi dinars because the currency is getting ready to be revalued at a higher rate and you'll be able to cash it in and get much more money back than you invested? Is this a scam? If it's not, why isn't there more information out there for people to know about it? I'm sure everyone would love to get more money if it's that easy. - M.K., Fayetteville
A: Don't. Do. It.
Not unless, unlike most of us, you have money you don't mind throwing away, according to a host of financial experts.
They note that the Iraqi dinar scam has been going on for years now and still people get sucked in by talk about how the dinar's value is going to skyrocket.
They say that's never going to happen. Before putting any money into this, you should read explanations of the situation by people with real names and real credentials.
They include Forbes magazine contributor Jay Adkisson, a lawyer who specializes in financial issues. Go to forbes.com/sites/jayadkisson and find his post from July 30, 2012. Don't be put off by its harsh title, "You Can't Fix Stupid: The Iraqi Dinar Scam Lives."
Another source: Louis Basenese, a former Wall Street analyst who's the founder and chief investment strategist for Wall Street Daily. Go to wallstreetdaily.com/author/louis-basenese and find his post from Dec. 19, 2012, entitled "The 10 Most Important Questions - And Predictions - for 2013 (Part 1)." The No. 3 question is on the future of the dinar as an investment.
Another good explanation is at learningmarkets.com/the-iraqi-dinar-scam.
Finally, you might want to listen to your own common sense on the subject of things that sound too good to be true.
