Near Field Communications was co-invented nearly a decade ago by Sony and NXP Semiconductors, then a division of Philips, near field communications has already become widely used for mobile point-of-sale payments in Europe and Asia. Phillips spun off NXP Semiconductors as a separate company, which just
went public last August.

Recently, there's been an exciting amount of activity taking place related to the implementation of near field communications in smartphones. Apple has hired experts in the field, filed several mobile payment patents, and has begun testing with technology sourced from NXP Semiconductors.

Google recently announced they will include development tools from NXP Semiconductors in their Android 3.0 smartphone operating system. They expect devices including the technology will be available in mid-2011.

With devices supporting near field communications becoming widely available in the U.S. later this year, mobile payments will start on what's projected to be rapid growth to more than a trillion dollars in annual transactions within the next few years.
