U.S. stock futures up before long weekend
By Steve Goldstein, MarketWatch
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stock futures rose on Friday ahead of the Memorial Day break, as bears may take advantage of what could be light volumes to close out negative bets.
S&P 500 futures rose 4.1 points to 892.80 and Nasdaq 100 futures added 8.5 points to 1,376.00. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 46 points.
Declines for industrial and materials companies after Standard & Poor's put Britain's Triple-A credit-rating under threat of downgrade sent U.S. stocks lower on Thursday, with the S&P 500 falling 15 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average retreating 129 points and the Nasdaq Composite falling 32 points.
"The outlook change for the U.K.'s AAA rating could be a seminal longer-term moment in this crisis," said Jim Reid, a credit strategist at Deutsche Bank in a note to clients.
"There will likely be a growing steady recognition that in trying to prevent a Depression, the transfer of risk has been shifted from the private sector to the public purses and this may create a longer, more drawn out problem."
The S&P 500 has dropped seven out of the last nine sessions.
"The risks to the risk rally have consolidated and the glass half-full argument seems to have reached the moment of critical mass," said Lena Komileva, head of G7 market economics, in a note to clients.
"The latest economic figures have reinforced the notion that the post-Lehman precipitous collapse in global economy has ended, and the stabilization of the international recession does look like the early stages of a normal recovery, but a normal economic cycle this is not."
The Bank of Japan on Friday said there were signs of improvement in the economy, the first time in nearly three years it's said so.
Meanwhile, The Washington Post reported that the Obama administration is preparing to send General Motors Corp. (GM 1.92, +0.47, +32.41%) into bankruptcy as early as the end of next week under a plan that would give the automaker tens of billions of dollars more in public financing. GM shares rose above $2 in pre-market trade.
And the FDIC seized BankUnited in the 34th bank failure of the year, with its assets sold off a private-equity group led by ex-North Fork Bank CEO John Kansas.
There were quite a few big names that reported results after Thursday's closing bell.
Sears Holdings (SHLD 50.19, -3.26, -6.10%) surged 24% after making a surprise first-quarter profit on cost cuts and tighter inventory controls.
Cougar Biotech (CGRB 36.98, +0.62, +1.71%) added 15% as Johnson & Johnson (JNJ 54.99, -0.39, -0.70%) offered $1 billion in cash for the firm. J&J shares were marginally higher in pre-market action.
Salesforce.com (CRM 39.65, -0.62, -1.54%) , the business software provider, slumped 8% after it cut its annual sales outlook.
Also in the spotlight, American International Group (AIG 1.80, +0.02, +1.12%) announced that Chairman and CEO Edward Liddy will step down and also proposed a 1-for-20 reverse stock split.
Western Digital (WDC 24.36, +0.22, +0.91%) will replace Embarq (EQ 40.24, -1.32, -3.18%) in the S&P 500, as the latter firm is being acquired by CenturyTel (CTL 29.66, -0.93, -3.04%) .
The dollar was weaker against both the euro and the Japanese yen.
Oil futures rose 55 cents to $61.60 a barrel, while yields on 10-year Treasury bonds fell 1 basis point to 3.36% ahead of an early close of trade in the bond market.
Yields move in the opposite direction to prices.
Overseas, the Nikkei 225 slipped 0.4% in Tokyo, and the FTSE 100 edged up 0.8% in London after a pounding on Thursday on the S&P downgrade of the country's credit-rating outlook.

Obrigado

4:15 pm : Emboldened by economic concerns, sellers took control of stocks and handed the major indices a marked loss. Though declines were deep and broad, stocks still finished off of their session lows.
A sharp pullback by the U.S. dollar helped gold prices close 1.5% higher at $951.20 per ounce and oil prices pare their losses to settle pit trading with a 1.6% loss at $61.02 per barrel. The greenback's 0.8% slide took the dollar index to a four-month low and came as global investors showed concern about the U.S. economic outlook in the wake of Standard & Poor's decision to lower its outlook for the United Kingdom. Just yesterday the Fed lowered its outlook for U.S. economic growth.
Worse-than-expected jobless claims supported the premise that economic conditions remain tenuous. Initial claims for the week ending May 16 totaled 631,000, while continuing claims climbed to a new record of 6.66 million

Na Europa, tudo verdinho! Estão todos confiantes de que o pior da crise já passou.

4:30 pm : A late selling effort caused stocks to close a choppy session in mixed fashion. The session's lack of direction followed disappointing housing data and a pullback by financial stocks.
News that housing starts and building permits recently fell below expectations jostled participants in the early going and undermined what was a positive bias ahead of the opening bell. Housing starts during April came in at an annualized rate of 458,000, while building permits for April hit a rate of 494,000. Both marked record lows.
