LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Bank of America Corp. wants to repay $45 billion it owes the U.S. Treasury by the end of this year, according to a report Wednesday in the Financial Times.
Bank of America (BAC 11.49, +0.24, +2.13%) is on track to raise about $35 billion in capital by the end of September, which it must do to fulfill Treasury stress-test requirements before paying back the funds it received under the Troubled Assets Relief Program, the report said, citing unnamed sources familiar with the plans.
Negotiations to sell some of the lender's non-core assets are underway, and if those sales occur within the next few months, the bank will be able both to meet its stress-test obligations and to pay back the TARP funds from its $173 billion cash reserves.
Bank of America has recently completed a number of fundraising moves, including the sale of its stake in a major Chinese bank and the issuing of $13.5 billion worth of new stock. See full story on Bank of America stock sale.
