James Nicholson, who heads investment firm Westgate Capital Management, is one of four people who were reportedly arrested Wednesday on charges of securities fraud in three different cases.

Nicholson was arrested by FBI agents, Bloomberg said, citing a spokesman for the agency's New York office.

The Nicholson case is the latest involving allegations of wrongdoing on Wall Street. In December, Bernard Madoff was said to have orchestrated a massive multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme, and earlier this month R. Allen Stanford was accused of fraud.

Westgate has offices in New York City and in Pearl River, N.Y. The firm's Web site doesn't have a great deal of publicly available information, but says its general philosophy is to achieve "consistent absolute returns regardless of market conditions."

The approach involves "an active, risk conscious approach to managing our portfolio. Our analytical process scrutinizes a company's fundamentals, valuation, and business model against the backdrop of market and economic factors," the site continues.

Westgate says it tries to generate returns from core long and short positions held for some time and from short-term positions driven by events or valuations believed to be incorrect.

The Bloomberg report also said that Paul Greenwood and Stephen Walsh of the firm W.G. Trading were arrested for what could be a $550 million financial fraud. Mark Bloom, a former associate of Greenwood and Walsh, was arrested in a separate investigation, the report said.

Earlier this month, the National Futures Association, a self-regulatory organization for the U.S. futures industry, took what it called an "emergency enforcement action" against Greenwood and Walsh for failing to produce certain records about their Greenwich, Conn., commodity pool.
