U.S. consumer confidence plunges again

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. consumer confidence plunged in June to reach its fifth lowest reading ever, the Conference Board reported Tuesday, as expectations reached a record low. The June consumer confidence index fell to 50.4 from a May reading that was revised to 58.1 from a prior estimate of 57.2. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected a June reading of 56.0. The percentage of consumers saying jobs are "hard to get" rose to 30.5% in June from 28.3% in May.
