NYSE had 2499 advancers to 793 decliners. Nasdaq saw 2022 advancers with 983 decliners. Very impressive once again.
THEMES TO WATCH – UPCOMING SESSION
We've mentioned 1290 as the line in sand repeatedly and with the S&P 500 breaching this level last night, our focus turns to the upside in equity markets regardless of the challenging macroeconomic backdrop in the US. The market clearly wants to rally and this isn't the time to fight such strong momentum. We still believe, however, that a conclusive market bottom hasn't been seen yet and the dominant 4-year cycle continues to call for a massive move lower in September/October. For now, though, equities should continue to rally not least the DAX, that pulled clear of key resistance 5810 yesterday.
Oil-related shares haven't participated in this latest rally as crude contracts continue to slide lower. Our futures desk noted $72.60/brl as the key level to watch and it clearly broke down yesterday. No apparent support in the short-term as bearish momentum continues to build. In other words, we need a reversal here or a base to form at least before producers and drillers turn around and lend a hand to the rally. OIH (OIH:xase) had a strong up-day yesterday but momentum still points lower toward the mid-July low 130. Paying attention to this index is usually a decent indicator for where the broader crude-related segment is heading. So, if the futures market turn around and OIH with it, we'd want to add long exposure. Until then, continue to sell into strength.
Heading in the complete opposite direction is technology. Hewlett-Packard's figures for Q2 were solid and the stock added 7 pct after-hours. This development, along with an apparent reversal in the Nasdaq 100, bodes well for the sector's performance. After two strong sessions, however, buying today is sucker's bet but upon some much-needed consolidation, this group could easily extend their advance along with Nasdaq 100 targeting the 1600 area.
