PARIS, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Shares in Thales rose more than 3 percent on Monday following a newspaper report that French telecoms equipment provider Alcatel was considering a 5-billion-pound ($8.57 billion) bid for the French defence electronics group.
Citing financial sources, the Sunday Times said Alcatel was considering the move as a strategy to counter tough international telecoms markets and to take advantage of French political wrangling over Thales.

By 0909 GMT, Thales shares were up 2.26 percent at 37.61 euros while shares in Alcatel were down 2.26 percent at 10.36 euros.

Shares in European aerospace group EADS were down 0.76 percent at 29.85 euros, meanwhile, on fears it could enter a bidding war for Thales, analysts said.

Alcatel declined to comment on Monday, while no one at Thales could be reached for comment.

Thales has been at the centre of merger or alliance speculation for over a year as the defence industry braces for another round of European consolidation, which few analysts believe will leave Thales untouched.

Alcatel, which owns a 9.5 percent stake in Thales, is its second largest shareholder behind the French government.

Thales is Europe's largest defence electronics group whose products span cockpit avionics to the next generation of devices linking soldiers on the ground. ((Reporting by Astrid Wendlandt, editing by Quentin Bryar; Paris Equities, astrid.wendlandt@reuters.com, +33 1 49 49 54 40)) ($1=.5837 Pound)
