Portugal to buy forest firefighting planes from Russia

MOSCOW, October 18 (RIA Novosti) - Portugal will buy Russian Be-200 planes for fighting forest fires, Portuguese Foreign Minister Diogo Freitas do Amaral said Tuesday.

Following talks with his Russian counterpart Minister Sergei Lavrov, the Portuguese minister said: "Portugal intends to begin negotiations on buying one, two, or three Russian aircraft built to fight forest fires from the air. These fires destroy huge tracts of land in Portugal every year, sometimes even threatening people's lives."

In the past few years, Russia has provided assistance to Europe in fighting forest fires. The Portuguese minister said that the Beriev Be-200 multi-purpose amphibious aircraft is internationally recognized as a leader in this area.
