Gateway turns in $15.1 million profit
GTW Gateway climbed 34 cents, to $2.89, on positive reaction to the No. 3 PC company's report of a profit of $15.1 million, or 4 cents a share, on $1.02 billion in revenue. During the same period a year ago, Gateway lost $59 million, or 16 cents a share, on $915 million in revenue.
The results beat the estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call, which had forecast a profit of 3 cents a share on $1.01 billion in revenue.
Overall PC sales grew to 1.17 million units, up 25% from a year ago. Gateway officials attributed the increase in PC sales to gains in the U.S. retail market.
Retail sales accounted for 871,400 PCs and $601 million in revenue, while direct sales totaled 70,900 units, good for $132 million.
Gateway's professional segment recorded sales of 224,000 computers making up $286 million in revenue during the quarter.
The company has made its push into the professional segments one of its key focal points this year. Gateway Chief Executive Wayne Inouye said that growth in the company's professional segment, "is the most-significant event taking place" with the company since it bought eMachines and started a massive restructuring in early 2004.
A year ago, Gateway's results were impacted by $63 million in restructuring charges. Inouye said that for all practical purposes, "the restructuring is done."
Going forward, Gateway reiterated its full-year forecasts for a net profit between 11 cents and 13 cents a share, with revenue in a range of $3.9 billion to $4 billion. Gateway also said that beginning with its 2006 fiscal year, it would no longer give annual earnings and revenue forecasts.
