Fed's Bies concerned about real estate speculation

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Federal banking supervisors are concerned that borrowers looking to buy commercial and residential real estate "could become increasingly speculative," Federal Reserve Governor Susan Bies said in a prepared speech Tuesday.
Regulators are also monitoring rising commercial real estate concentrations at some banks, she said.
Speaking to a bank group in South Carolina, Bies also said federal authorities will issue new guidance about bank secrecy rules by the end of June.
She did not mention monetary policy in her speech.
Bies's comments mirror recent remarks by Fed chief Alan Greenspan, who told Congress there was "froth" in the U.S. housing market.
