WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Non-manufacturing sectors of the U.S. economy expanded at a faster pace during February, the Institute for Supply Management reported Thursday.

The ISM non-manufacturing index rose to 59.8 percent from 59.2 percent in January.

Economists were looking for the index to rise to 59.6 percent, according to a survey conducted by MarketWatch.

The employment index rose to 59.6 percent from 52.2 percent. This is a record high for the employment index.

Robert Brusca, chief economist at FAO Economics, said the ISM services employment index does not track the Labor Department's non-farm payroll data very well.

The department will release its February report on Friday. Economists are expecting 220,000 jobs were created in the month.

But other economists took the jump in employment as positive sign.

"The case for expecting big payroll gains either in tomorrow's February report or shortly thereafter becomes stronger by the day," said Ian Shepherdson, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics.

New orders rose to 61.6 percent from 60.5 percent.

The prices paid index inched lower to 66.4 percent from 66.6 percent.

Twelve of 17 industries were expanding in February, led by mining and communication.

Readings over 50 percent in the ISM index indicate expansion in the sector. The ISM measures the breath of health across firms, rather than the intensity of growth. The index has been above 50 for 23 straight months.
