Short interest on NYSE highest since June 2003
Tue Feb 22, 2005 04:47 PM ET

NEW YORK, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Short interest on the New York Stock Exchange rose to the highest level in a more than a year and half, during a period in which good quarterly earnings and falling crude oil prices drove stocks higher.
Short interest in the 30 days ended Feb. 15 rose to 8,007,342,082 shares from 7,733,762,103 shares on Jan. 14, according to figures released by the exchange on Tuesday.

The last time short interest topped 8 billion was June 13, 2003, according to the NYSE.

During the 30-day period covered by the NYSE's short interest report, the Standard & Poor's index rose 2.16 percent. Since then, the S&P has fallen 2.1 percent.

Investors who sell securities "short" profit from betting that stock prices will fall. Short-sellers borrow shares and sell them, hoping to return them at a lower price and pocket the difference.

Short interest in the stock market is often a gauge for the level of skepticism among investors. Rising short positions can be a bearish indicator, since investors are betting against more stocks. Falling short positions can be perceived as bullish.

The short interest on Feb. 15 was equal to 2.2 percent of the total shares outstanding on the exchange.
